Why not to accept "gifts" on paypal when selling items on paypal

Just a fair warning to all I got some funds frozen from paypal because I accepted a payment marked as a "gift" from a head-fier for something I sold and those funds will not be released for 180 days ymmv but for me it is not worth the risk.

Any explanation? Sounds weird. I have sent money (at seller's request) as a gift, but no complaints.New policy? I will refrain from it if that's the case, of course. So far, only received small amounts, but none as gifts but one.

I think it is a new policy all that was done was a address was written in the notes section and that was enough for paypal to completely lock the funds luckily my big sale (edition 8's) was not done as a gift so those funds will be made available to me and not frozen. Just wanted to give head-fiers a wake up call that a seller can get screwed by trying to avoid the fees since paypal is the big bad wolf trying to scrape as much money as possible out of people while providing horrid customer service.

I've sent pretty large payments - close to $1000 was the largest, I believe - by paypal using the gift mode without issues. Worst case, you'll have to eat the 3%, but you can generally get away with it as far as I know.

And the way to get around it is to just pm the address.

If it's any consolation, I got my paypal frozen because I asked for an item I paid to be shipped to my work address!

They'll find a reason to be officious and delay and hold your money or something.

Paypal may not be worth the risk: I've not had problems with marking payments as 'gift' so far, but due to the snow, I can't get down to the post office to check whether anything has arrived.....

I have had many issues with paypal up to and including hackers getting access to my account and making a purchase. Anyways my dad is going to make a account so I can still buy my amp but it was a awful experience.

wow, thanks, I didn't realize that. I sent funds to a head-fier as "gift" once and it seemed to be no problem. They must have changed the policy - it would be nice to have gotten an email from them about it.

Yeah I just wanted to let you guys know I got screwed up on 2 sales of my tomahawk and shadow from it and while I was ok with it in the past this will be the last time I accept that kind of thing

One of them just had name from head-fi and address and the other said like good to see you! if you could send back the amp I loaned you please send it back to....nothing linking to a sale at all but they just froze it all up....but I paid for my b22 so all is well just won't see that 470 bucks for quite a while :\

This is the reason why I rarely ever hold funds in my Paypal account. They'll hold your funds to do an investigation and it often takes them months to deal with it.

Luckily, I haven't experienced any problems dealing with people on Head-Fi.

I've also had problems with PayPal in the past, they take forever to release funds from a refund, and I've also had funds frozen (to this day I still can't figure out why) ... so like mentioned above, I just try to withdraw my money as soon as possible.

Paypal is fine....until something happens. Ever try to go through paypal dispute process?

This is what happens with Monopoly, just like Audiogon. I wish somebody reputable would step up and establish some decent competition for both Paypal and Audiogon.

Umm no because that's a classic paypal hack. Obviously you didn't know this and it was your account but how are they to know that?
