PICS CAN BE FOUND IN THIS THREAD and in my signature

NOTE: Some of the pics in the above thread, are now a little different. The driver's grills were removed for V4.0 of the MOD (see bottom of the post for updates), and the drivers were put further.

HIS SOUND

They have a natural, crisp, clear/clean and a transparent sound, that is almost neutral and smooth, that is very airy and exquisite for an completely sealed headphone. After of all these drivers are used in the Sony Qualia headphones.

It has excellent detail and separation of instruments as they are known already, but without being Clinical. They were toned to be fun and to sound agradable after all, without the weaknesses of the SA5000 headphones.

The soundstage in this headphone is simply outstanding for it being a closed headphone. It is very spacious/big, airier and 3D Like. None as the stock Sony headphones which is flat in comparison. They are simply another class of headphone. Even in closed form it is deeper than my ex DT990 '05.

The headstage is bigger too in this headphone and in all the axis, posibly less than my ex stock Beyerdynamic DT990 '05; except in depht, even in closed form.

The image and instrument/voices separation are excelent too. I can distinguish various instruments and voices in a recording with ease. After all it have one of the world´s fastest Dynamic Drivers.

They have a natural tonality. But it can be tuned later with different wood cups at lawnton audio for example, to perfectionate and tune his sound. But as they are. They sound beautiful.

BASS:

The bass is very refined, natural, tight and very fast; Has very good extension (it can sound with some autority in the 16 hz zone) and definition, and very good Slam (slightly more in the upperbass, but less in the midbass than with the stock drivers)). It will never be bloated. It have just the right amout of quantity (i think that DT880 quantity), which will not pollute the midrange.
It is very deep and something lifelike (it can be perceived in the the distance somethimes as if it was an autentic subwoofer, but obviously without his strenght), such that i can feel it. This has a very 3D dimensionality in it, that is astonishing.

MIDS:

The mids in this headphone are simply beautiful and natural too.
This tonality can be enaced with different wood cups (as lawnton wood cups) are very detailed and have very good tonality in them.
They have a somewhat Forward midrange (slightly less than my modded Ultrasones) that is engaging with the music, but that doesn't sound harsh or strident with the voices, even in higher volumes.

TREBLE:

The treble in this headphone is airier, open, clear, sharp, clean and precise. It extends to the stratosphere literally speaking without being harsh or very bright.
It is smoother and have a lot of sparkle and energy but without being sibilant (if it have any (can be the source, or the recording), it have MUCH less sibilance (if really have any) than the stock/modded Denon drivers).

It is a very good bang for the buck for this price. I put a lot of effort and love to make this headphones to sound as they do now.

My Ratings are (like headphonereviews.org but with some extras):
- Bass Extension: 9
- Bass Impact: 8.5
- Bass Quality: 9 (these as the stock drivers are one of the most tolerant drivers that can tolerate big volumes without distort, specially with bass heavy music (not as my dead pair of DX1000 drivers...). The quality of both drivers is better too (specially Denons))
- Mids Quality: 8,5 (Better midrange than stock/modded Denon drivers)
- Highs Extension: 10
- Highs Quality: 9
- Soundstage: 7,5 (in his closed form ), 8.5 [in his stock form (semi closed form)]
- Detail: 9.0 (as is characteristic with these drivers).
- Isolation: 7.5 (much better than an stock Denon, as good as my ultrasones)
- Sound leakage: 0.5 (almost as good as a Beyerdynamic DT770, MUCH better than a stock Denon)
- Comfort: 10, it is known already. It is a Denon based headphone after all.
- Durability: 9
- Improvement with a better source: 7,5
- Improvement with Amplification: 8 (they are rather hard to drive, even with my powerful amp. They simply can reach higher with a better amp)

UPDATE 25/03/2010: Changes in Ver 4.0 of this mod [(previous and former versions were 3.5 and V3.0 (of the pics)]

As i said in the top of the thread, The driver's grills were removed for the current version of this MOD. I use another cloths too, and other optimizations...

They sound now more natural and realistic, the sound is more coherent (much less blurredness at higher volumes, and in very complex music). The image, separation and soundstage gets improved a lot. The bass gets more textured tonally and slightly deeper too. But the biggest improvement is that there is more microdetails retrieval in the music.

Sorry for the Denon owners here. But this headphones are now two or three (in some things) steps above to the modded Denons and stock headphones in almost everything....
Now they doesn't have almost nothing to envy to a Senheiser HD800.... They are a "closed sounding" version of those; but with a warmer tonality and less sharp highs...

My Ratings now are:
- Bass Extension: 9.5
- Bass Impact: 8.5
-
Bass Quality: 9.5
- Mids Quality: 9
- Highs Extension: 10
- Highs Quality: 9.5
- Soundstage: 9
- Detail: 10
- Isolation: 7.5
- Sound leakage: 0.5
- Comfort: 10
- Durability: 9
- Improvement with a better source: 7,5
- Improvement with Amplification: 8

All in my most honest opinion, as it always characterizes me. Lies are low, and i detest liers in general....

I guess people are waiting for a photo of the whole setup not just the drivers.

I am a bit unsure what the buyer is going to get.

I will donate some of this money to the Red cross, Caritas and to the Save the Children Foundation. I am not a rich person; but i want to do it to help more to others (i do charity almost all the time, but not in big quantities)

I don't have a hurry to sell this pair of headphones. They sound 'almost' perfect for an Completely Closed Headphone.

The decision is yours...

Can you please describe what mods were made?

e.g.
step 1: take a stock headphone x
step2. remove drivers of headphone x and insert drivers from headphone y

thank you

I will explain you step by step, but without prologues (i am not good for that)

Ok, i will explain you step by step.
Step 0: I use a kind of cotton (i don't known the name of it, but it is less woolly and more consistent), which give great results to the sound, damping the bass in the stock headphone a little. Making it tighter, detailed and with more texture; and reducing leakage (the rest is explained in my profile and see in the pictures in the link/signature), and this was compatible (worked too without compromise) with the new drivers [the sound of the stock pads, with the Denon drivers; give at it, a very dense sound (something mushy)]. But, it was a welcome improvement with the new drivers (how i will explain next).
The bass get warmer in tonality without losing details (it is speedier as always, but with better texture, and more natural sounding).
The midrange becomes more exuberant/lush (the best improvement), and natural sounding.
The highs become more tamed (less energetic and less sharp, but never laidback; just to the point) with the cloth. But with the same extension (i can listen the 20000 hz zone, without any problem in the 10 o'clock of my amp)
Step 1: How you see in the pictures. I use a stock Denon headphone [...i have modded the Denons before (see step 0)].
Step 2: i remove the stock drivers and use these of a Sony SA3000 (which are the same as those in the SA5000). But before, i polish the plastic to put the new drivers (which for obvious reasons were bigger than stock Denon drivers).
And Step 3: I do different tests with the Ultrasone CD and miscellaneous music to test the details, separation, ambience, resolution, soundstage, etc.

Note: I also did tests before with different pads, and the stock Denons (after in inverted position) were the most optimal for the headphone/drivers of the three {Beyerdynamic DT990 '05 edition [hyper bright/sibilant sound (Midrange, treble, very lean and inorganic bass), leak a lot of sound]}, Beyerdynamic DT770Pro (very bright sound/less sibilant sound than DT990 pads but still very sibilant; much more isolation and better leakage protection but, the stock pads were better).

Hope that it be enough, and that you don't get confused.

It is possibly the best REAL [not acoustic optimizer (that is the vented port that have the majority of "closed headphones")] closed headphone in the world, for his Uniformity and natural sound, for a real closed headphone (sort DT770pro, DX1000 and a little others).

I Accept as partial trades (Only one trade + money) Only open headphones [i need isolation (to hear the door ring/Telephone), that this headphone doesn't give me].
