I know I'm certainly in no position to recommend a "best" budget setup.
I'm hardly an expert on anything. I've been able to listen to a few headphones and several amps. I just post my experiences and hope they are of some value to someone. One way or the other. For or against. Good or bad

I stand by my ultra-budget setup here (sansa clip + JVC HA-S150 Flats). $20 and all it's missing is some music .

My ultra budget rig is not one I listen to much. I got a Magnavox 1A9217 (Stax SR-3 clone) for $12, with my NAD 3155 from Goodwill for $25, it sounds pretty good.

My sub $100 budget choice is a Yamaha HP-1 out of a vintage speaker amp. For a little more, the HP-1 out of a Starving Student.

Sub $200 is my SR-Gamma, SRD-7, and NAD 3155. This sounds good enough to me that I haven't been tempted to upgrade to higher end Stax. I've heard them at meets, and while they sound better, the price to performance ratio doesn't do it for me.

The headphone I listen to the most is the Yamaha YH-100 out of my Starving Student, about $250.

All of these would sound fine to me directly out of my computer if it's on board sound hadn't died. I currently have an EMU 0404 USB as source which adds $150 to any of the rigs.

For me, "budget" means the best possible with the less expense. And your portable one really wins meeting the criteria (well, I know, everyone has his own budget limit...). Switch from S-150 to KSC-75 if you want open or CX150 if you want IEM and, IMO, you're done. The whole thing will cost you less than 50 even new...

Best regards
K.

My greatest wows and enjoyment before I got so wrapped up in all this:

HD580 with portable amp (back then it was RSA SR71, but it can be any portable amp) gave me the greatest enjoyment.

Now it has to be the Grado RS1 with Pico dac/amp out of mac book.
It gives me the most bang for the buck.

My best budget setup is basic at best. Just the Pioneer Monitor 10 connected to my old Philips discman. It works with two recharchable batteries and is perfect for home use.

FLAC files from laptop > NuForce uDAC($100) > Indeed Hybrid (sylvania 7308 tube $75) > k702 (sweetcome tribraid cable $250+$50(cable)) all together $475 for the money i would say barely anything will touch this setup. woo happy listening!

my best budget setup is my only set up:

Westone ES3X - 850$
HeadAmp Pico DAC/Amp - 500$

I would highly recommend this budget combo:

FLAC > Beresford Caiman DAC/AMP > Alessandro MS1

$ 430

Sounds awesome, true analog sound all the way.

Fuze/Clip + RE0

Straight from source, the RE0 still sing beautifully.
