Horrible hiss with the 1st generation iPhone.

I own a 5.gen iPod nano and yesterday bought a 1.gen iPhone.
I get zero hiss with the nano but when I tried the iPhone for the first time I got a loud hiss no matter where I had the volume.
The headphones I'm using are sennheiser CX300.

Is this normal for the iPhone?

Yes it is, though if you think that horrible, you should notice a low-lying hiss in the Nano. If you are that annoyed by it, it is good that you don't have an AMP3, an iRiver (older than 3 years old), a Sony. You and I might be analogues of each other - it is a horrible existence.
