While the 2SK170 is easy to find, the only place selling the 2SJ74 is ampslab -and they have a minimum order quantity of 20. Where can I get these on the cheap? Alternately, are there any suitable replacements?

iirc, I've been able to sub J271 (Mouser 512-J271) in other designs.

That's his price, including shipping. I sell them, but only in matched quads and at the same price as AMB. I challenge you to find them cheaper and matched elsewhere. Here's an example and they don't offer current matching:
B&D Enterprises: 2SK170
P.S. As you noticed, ampslabs sells them in quantities only, and the matching is up to you - a significant investment over a matched pair or matched quad.
EDIT: The 2SJ74 is also available from BDent - at a price:

You can buy 170BLs at Mouser for 80¢ each, or 55¢ each per 100.
Yet another place to buy already matched quads is *ahem* Beezar.com, or you could roll the dice on ebay.
Hard to beat an already matched quad from someone with a good reputation on this forum already. I'de be surprised if anyone makes much more than postage on Toshiba parts.
EDIT Sorry Tom, as usual I posted before reading your post thoroughly.
