Binaural DAC?

Thread Starter
Was just sitting here listening to music and reflecting - what if someone could create some sort of algorithm for a DAC that would convert the stereo signal into a binaural signal for headphones? It seems like something like this should be doable theoretically, although I'm not sure what it would entail - it would be like an infinitely more complicated version of crossfeed. But it would be a badass feature for a DAC used with headphones....

Closest thing is the Smythe research unit afaik.

I don't think you could accomplish anything more than speaker virtualization, which would be neat but is already available in a couple of different formats (the Symth unit, Dolby Headphone, etc), but more importantly would fall far far short of the incredible imaging of an proper binaural recording.

You can add a DSP that converts stereo to binaural.
