Thinking about playing electric guitar

Hey there people,

Well, I have been playing piano for a long time now (15+ years ), but I no longer have time to practice it.

I have liked electric guitar a lot, and since I am listening to loads of metal riffs and great guitar players I have thought about starting to play the guitar. I have picked some guitars from friends, and could manage to play something small. Even if my fingers hurt a lot after that.

I know how to read piano tabs (with pentagrams and so), but have never read an ABCD... tab. However I believe it can't be that hard. If I can read one I can read that.

I have also found a nice starter electric guitar set for a nice price (on thomann), and I have headphones I can plug into it to practice anywhere.

However I would be learning by my own, can't go to classes with teacher any more. What tips could you give me in order to really get into it and not just leave the guitar aside? Any good internet help I can get? It is not as if I am starting on music from zero. But guitars are very different from piano.

If I am asking is so that I start with it from the good path (doesn't matter if slower, if I get to learn the scales, techniques and such)

What's an ABCD tab?

Tips to get started? Stick with it! Don't give up. Focus a lot on technique or else you will have a poor foundation. There are some videos up on YouTube but I personally don't think they're very good. Do you have friends that play guitar? Start learning first position (open) chords and pentatonic scales. Then move on to bar chords and diatonic scales and arpeggios. But really focus on technique. Play songs/tabs that are fun for you so you have more motivation to practice.

There's more but I can't think of it right now. Guitar is a lot of fun though!

Oh, about ABCD tab I was speaking about the ones where you see a number and letter instead of the notes Do, Re, Mi, like in piano music.

I'd like to really get into metal, but i'd have to find easy material to start first.

That tab you're talking about sounds like a standard guitar tab to me.. 6 lines e, B, G, D, A, E with numbers on the lines right? Each line relates to a string on the guitar and they're lined up in order, with e being the highest pitch and E being the lowest pitch (or D if you're in drop D tuning, etc.). The numbers on the line correspond to which fret to press on the guitar, and you read from left to right like sheet music.

Try black sabbath tabs, riffs are pretty easy, and the solos are challenging enough for a beginner but not so hard thatll discourage you. some easy riffs i learned when starting out was like Crazy Train, Paranoid, Seek and Destroy. Heartwork and Symbolic are good death metal riffs that aren't too hard.

Igo to the ultimate guitar tabs website and go to their lessons sections and just read through and try it out. watch youtube videos and play with friends to make sure your technique is good.

guitar pro and guitar pro tabs will be helpful in allowing you to slow tabs down to practice, and you can have accompaniments backing you up as you learn your part. Check it out.

Yeah, was speaking about that. It is different from a piano music score. (with 5 lines notes written on top of it)

Looks like it's got everything for a beginner!

Whatever you do, don't compare the guitar tab to an actual score/staff, I find it to be very different and confusing if you do so.
