New rig advice in the UK =) help UK Head-fier

Hi there everybody,

I know that there have been 1000s threads like this on the forum but I cant find any advice on existing threads so ..

After 2 years buying/selling several pairs of headphones/earphones Im really exhausted of finding the true set up for myself, cans that i have owned in the past really didn't satisfy me at all (perhaps of my source-mp3 128 kbps). So I need a setup that shouldn't reveal flaw at all.

My budget is £300-£400, My source is Macbook/laptop - Mostly Mp3 128-192 bitrate. Type of music: Slow Jam, R & B, acoustic and pop.

Thanks everyone.

IMO, you will not find a setup costing £300-400 that will not show up the quality of your 128kbps mp3's. This is the source of your frustration. One of the prime and expected qualities of premium cans is the ability to resolve detail.

You could pose the question again when you've decided to improve the technical quality of your digital music. If you really want to keep your music as is, then a pair of Bose Triports will give you punch and body without much detail.

I think the more you spend the worse those 128 mp3s will sound, if you want to stick with that bit rate get some igrado's or the SR60i's.

I agree with the others, I suspect your problem is the source not the headphones. To confirm this search for bit rate comparison tets on the web and see if you can hear a difference. Better still import a CD at different bit rates and see if you can tell the difference.

If you can, then you need higher quality files. If your music is illegally shared, sorry tough. If you have downloaded it through itunes, you have an option to upgrade. If you imported from CD, you should re-import.

If you cannot tell the difference between bit rates, what headphones have you had and not liked and why. Then you can work on finding a headphone that suits you.

What have you already tried, and in what ways did it not satisfy you? The more you're able to be specific about these things, the more we'll be able to understand what you're looking for.

I have owned:

Earphones: UE super.fi 5, Senn IE 7, Klipsch X5, and an awful lot budget earphones like the CX 300.

Headphones: Senn HD 555, Monster Beats studio.

And now I need a pair of open-back headphones + amp.

I love the Klipsch X5 but they are not really up to the job of home use...

Thanks anyway to everyone, i know that my source is crap. However I'm not an english speaker so my music is divided into 2 sections: English and my language.

For English songs i get FLAC or WAV mostly but for my language, songs are available only on 128 MP3 Kbps....

Can you tell the difference? Do the English songs sound more alive, clearer and detailed?

Is the problem that alot of your music sounds a bit flat and unexciting?
