An Idea..

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but it would be nice when an item is sold in the For Sell forum that the seller left the price that the item was sold for, instead of removing it. This is useful information for buyers/sellers in the future. I don't understand why people remove this information.

Last thing I need is to have someone price police me (and trust me, I've had someone PM me saying this) on my gear because another Head-fi'er sold it cheaper.

This has been mentioned countless times before... to no avail, unfortunately.

It is my personal policy to always leave the price, but to put (SOLD) after the price once the item has been sold.

Oh my God, wasn't there a bet going on as to how long it would take for another one of these questions to pop up again?

I know somebody guessed around New Year's time.

Seems to me that majority of the members want the price to be left alone and not removed.

Really, two out of three of the threads you posted ended up in a silly contest. You've also said this topic has been "discussed to death", yet I don't draw any conclusion from reading those threads.

I don't know, that policy makes sense to me. The point is that the seller can post whatever price s/he wants, regardless of outside price pressure. It's rude to send 'price police' PMs, feel free to tell the sender that.

"discussed to death" in the sense that you probably find some 50 more threads about the subject if you search around.

Both sides have valid points, so I guess there it stands..

Yup, it's ultimately up to the seller's discretion on whether the price stays or goes. Pretty much the end of the story there.

Someone suggests this every couple months.

I've had to remove prices from FS threads because sometimes it's the only thing that keeps people from asking if an item I've clearly edited as being SOLD, is still available.

Inevitably someone argues that if people left the prices there, this would allow them to determine if someone else is trying to gouge them.

Well, yes and no. An item is worth precisely what you can get for it right this second. Demand for head-fi related items fluctuates wildly, as does the condition of items on offer.

Yeah, occasionally someone gets accused of trying to flip an item for a profit, but it's not as though you're being forced to pay their asking price.

I think the word discretion is the key word. It's an option.
I'd just prefer if people updated threads (preferably in the title, although a lot of people don't know how to edit titles) to mention that the item is sold.

I'm all for prices being kept, and I think it would be useful for research. Having said that prices also have a lifetime, possibly not more than a few months.

However I also think the reason the prices aren't there is it's less contentious - this way you can't argue about how much an item was sold previously. Is there a table for general price depreciations when it comes to head-fi equipment? That would help somewhat

Quite a few things I've sold have gone for less than what I asked for, so maybe I should remove the prices?

I don't see how anyone would ask if something is still available if you edit the first post (click on "Advanced" as well) and change the title from "FS:" to "SOLD:".

The betting is now open again. There are no rules this time. The person who guesses closest to the next date this topic reappears will win a potentially life changing prize, graciously donated by myself. Please make your predictions early. This contest is open to all, including the OP.

My prediction: This will come up again on Febuary 19, 2010.

Oh...and it doesn't count if you pick a date and then start your own thread.

I'm gonna up Mr. Gotit's life-changing prize and throw in an afterlife-changing prize, unfortunately redeemable only after death, but serious fun nonetheless. Pick your date well and soon!
