Nintendo Dsi As Source

I got a Nintendo DSi for Christmas. I was wondering if anyone here uses one of these, or any other Nintendo DS, as a portable source. What are your impressions? I normally use mp3s but the NDSi uses AAC so I have to download iTunes and convert. I did find some sites that talked about homebrew for the NDS. I was particularly interested in MoonShell which allows mp3s to be played on the NDSi. Anyone heard of this?

My kids got DS lites for Christmas. I bought the M3i Zero flashcart for them, not so much to use as a music player but so we can put multiple games on a memory card and boot off that. I believe the OS on the flashcart has Sakura built in allowing you to play multimedia files.

However, there is no line out on the DS as far as I know, although maybe there is on the DSi. While it might be a nice little portable unit that can play games, music, movies and store appointments and contacts, I don't think it's going to be the last word in audio quality. That said, unless you're fanatical about your portable rig, I'm sure it will be good enough to enjoy it.

I've tried my DS Lite with R4, but it just hisses way too much and the volume control is too imprecise with all the headphones I've tried with them.

Why would you use a DSi for music?

The DSlite is really low gain, you have to use Nintendos' earbuds or you can't get any reasonable volume at all, no way to make it loud, probably a "guvnr" in there to protect the little ones' ears (and Nintendo from litigation)...

I really was wanting an iPod Touch. I've been using a first gen 2GB Clix. My dh is into mods and homebrew and after doing some research he decided on the NDSi. I did put some songs on an SD card and have given it a listen with my marshmallows. Honestly the sound isn't too bad. Granted the volume doesn't go really loud but for most of my listening sessions I don't really care. If in the future I decide this isn't for me my dd would gladly take this off my hands for her gaming pleasure.
