Some will say the best sounding one is Sony X Series.
Some will say the best one for sound is Cowon S9

Since I am looking for a good sounding player that supports flac and which has a large storage I am considering the ipod classic 5.5. However in direct comparison in sound quality is the ipod far behind? I have also been looking at the Sony X series but it does not seem to have any suppor of flac, does it?

Nope, which is what is steering me towards the S9.

Ipod Classic is best if you amplify it(Mustang+ALO 18AWG Cryo dock cable), S9 and X series wallkmen are very good if no need extra bulk.

The Rio Karma, quite rare could be an option. I can't afford one but if I could I'd have two by now.
