Della Reese was recommended to me, and I enjoy her stuff. ;D

Stacey Kent is absolutely fantastic in this category! Also great recordings too...

Claire Martin, Stacey Kent, Diane Reeves, Sara K, Ana Caram, Eliane Elias. have some terrific audiophile recordings.

Abbey Lincoln - "Gotta pay the band" is a lovely album.

And of course the usual classic oldies, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen Macrae, Anita O'Day, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Johnny Hartman, Frank Sinatra to name a few.

A few from my collection - check out Youn Sun Nah's "Voyage" - awesome recording and very cool. You may also like Melody Gardot "Worrisome Heart". Eva Cassidy is a slightly different flavor (more bluesy) but has one of the most incredibly voices ever - totally intoxicating.

Not exactly jazz, necessarily, but if you like Krall, you would probably like Holly Cole... who is more consistently enjoyable, in my opinion.

..I find the same. I can listen to Cole more than Krall

You might like Madeleine Peyroux too. I bought her album and realised it was jazz. Played it once and realised it's actually very likeable, but it's just not my thing.

Vocal jazz to me has always been more like Mose Allison. Not a vocalist in the sense that you're looking for by any stretch of imagination...

My current favorite female jazz singers are: Susannah McCorkle (very intelligent delivery, full of life), Patti Austin (full of humor) and Keely Smith (powerful voice absolutely suited to big-band sounds)

An absolutely gorgeous voice, and taken well before her time

For more vintage stuff:
Ella Fitzgerald
Sarah Vaughan
Etta Jones (not to be confused with Etta James, although she's good too)
Ruth Brown
Alberta Hunter
Keely Smith
Peggy Lee
Billie Holiday
Blossom Dearie (her voice isn't for everybody)
Nina Simone
Dinah Washington
Anita O'Day
Thelma Middleton
Carrie Smith
LaVern Baker
Ernestine Anderson
Barbara Morrison

... I like bobby mcferrin. IMO the best vocalist alive. He IS his instrument.

This isnt 'straight ahead' jazz, but theres a bunch of straight ahead jazz in his discog.

X2 on Keely Smith. I've always loved her.

Pick up some Eartha Kitt while you're at it.

Jill Barber and Sophie Milman come to mind, as does Sarah Sleen; she's in the pop category.

I would like to add Susannah McCorkle's name to this list.

Radka Toneff is worth checking out imo.
