With the 650s? I sure hope not.

I'm sure you can find general comparisons in the portable amp forum.

Bilavideo, I had something of the same experience when I finished my ribbons. I hadn't really heard good audio before and found the plans in AudioXpress magazine. I had run across them while poking around for information on my tube radios. The ribbons certainly seemed cool, but I had no idea what I was in for. I tested them for polarity and continuity with an AA battery, then hooked them up to the el cheapo all-in-one Sony stereo I had.

It was amazing. I couldn't stop listening. And they sort of freaked me out because it was hard to tell where the music was coming from. That was in 2002 and I've been a ways down the path since.

the shadow is pretty powerful as far as portable amps go, but the 650 is very demanding.

I wouldn't even bother with a portable amp for earphones (IEMs yes), yet alone full sized headphones. TBH, I regret buying my RSA P-51 Mustang. I am driving them from my iPod touch 3rd gen>Pure copper LOD>RSA p-51 mustang>Westone UM3x and can tell a 5% increase in overall sound quality as opposed to straight from the iPod touch. This is playing .wav songs. I hear slightly deeper bass and a tad better highs and that's about it. The extra $400 to me is just not worth it at all. For your 650's I suggest investing in a good desktop rig, maybe try saving up for the WooAudio 6, it seems to be the amp to get for Sennheisers. Heck, I am probably getting it next year for the to come Grado HF-2, RS-1 and Ultrasone ALO-780

I think it's a waste of money for the HD650. Sure, there may be some improvement over a headphone socket in an mp3 player or sound card. But you'd get a lot more results out of a stationary desktop amp. These headphones simply aren't meant for low-output sources.

But if you sidestep to the HD600, you will have an easier time getting away with a portable amp, or an inexpensive desktop amp for that matter. The HD600 is easier to drive. The HD650 scales better but the point at which it overtakes the HD600 is well into the Big Rig territory.

Ok then,

What do you all think of going to the Little Dot DAC and MKVII? I know someone mentioned the Woo 6.

i just got my hd650 in the mail..........and all i can say is holy [r@p! even just plugged into my measly creative xmod usb and computer, im mesmerized. stunned. enthralled. like a kid on christmas.

i can hear details and events for the first time in music i have listened to for years. i can only imagine what ANY amp will do. a decent DAC and home amp would be eye popping.

i remember the first time i went 0-60 in a hair under three seconds on my first motorcycle. ive had many other bikes waaaaaaaaay faster and better, but nothing has ever felt like that day again.
