Shure SE530s harsh?

I got a pair a couple days ago for Christmas, and for certain things( Chronic by Dre, Porcupine Tree, Shape of Punk to come by Refused, Decemberunderground by AFI, Isis, King Crimson) they sound fantastic, but for a lot of metal, such as Opeth, Mastodon, Converge, I've noticed they sound quite harsh.

Is it because of the type of music? If so this would be a big problem, as I have more metal in my collection than I do rock

I've listened to multiple albums( a lot being the above) out of my old computer( not too great sounding any way you look at it), my Zune( no hiss, opposed to my first PC which does hiss since I have to plug into speakers), and my dad's laptop which really sounded fantastic with my AT ES7( and Panopticon by Isis blew me away on my Shure's from this PC)

Which tips are you using?

I have to agree with you. I've used the 530's for about 6 months and have always had that same feeling. Now that I've bought the UE Triple fi 10 it's even more noticeable. The TF10's are more easy on the ears to me, not the same harshness. Oh - and Divergeunify - we seem to have the exact same taste in music Nice!

...Kay, first, again, which tips are you using, and second, where is the music harsh: lows, mids, highs

Compared to the TF10 and the IE8, I would have to agree. They are darker sounding phones than the SE530 to my ears. I also find that cymbals sound more harsh through the SE530's.

imo the rolled off highs of the se530 doesnt really sound best for metal. you tend to crank it up and that may result in it being harsh. i suggest you try other iems like ie8/tf10/w3

If the cymbals sound harsh, you are already listening to music too loud.

^ No, it's not that simple and I listen to my music at low to moderate volumes. It's more to do with how the SE530 presents these higher frequencies. I'm speaking comparatively here with the TF10 and the IE8. I'm not saying that the SE530's are harsh sounding IEMs per se.

ok......could you all post a few songs that sound harsh on the se 530?..I just wanna see what I hear...don't really remember anything off the top of my head, but i've had the shures a good while.

EDIT: Sorry op, I missed your reference material.

Been listening to Blackwater Park after reading this thread and the mastering definitely exaggerates everything in-between 1KHz-3KHz, Still Life doesn't.

Emperor's stuff sounds just fine.

I guess it's a crazy world...........having seen/read many of your posts, I thoughy we had similar hearing, however.....In my humble opinion, the se530's make for a better iem so far as I'm concerned, at least compared to the IE8 and monster Turbine pro. And The IE7. I don't remember the Triples well enough to comment on that. Is it possible the op isn't taking into account how much more sensitive the se 530's are compared to just about any other iem? Quite suprised that I like opeth so much with the shures. And found lots of cool new music along the way. I need to clarify....I meant better for metal......not everything. Not sure about that, there are times I reach for the senns.

^ I'm sorry to disappoint you.

If we all heard the same, I guess only one iem would exist, Of course you'd still have to have an overpriced deluxe model even then, so the snobs could pay more for the same thing.

I'm using the black foam tips, and the music is harsh somewhere between highs and meds
