wellshin brand ac cable shield question please

hi,

i was wondering if anyone knows if wellshin 14/3 sjt shielded cable, when terminated from the factory with molded connectors has a floating "or" telescoping shield.

i have 150' of bulk cable i want to make up with bryant's and i don't know wether to connect the shield or not. i prefer to do as they do with their pre assembled product. just in case you were wondering i am not still going cable crazy. it is not even for my own componets.

don't worry, i know all about shielding and grounding scenarios. i just wanted to know what wellshin themsleves do with this cable. there is like no info on the net i can find.

thanks,
and happy holidays

Sounds like a very specific question, I'd just email the manufacturer and ask.

yeah thats probably the best idea. it would be rare that anyone would know something that specific. i just thought i'd give it a shot here. just hope they speak english so i can understand what they tell me.

although i think i could just ask the volex/quail rep monday since those are both wellshin i think. however she is just a saleswoman. i find she is clueless about technical stuff usually.

i am thinking the ground must float though. there is no drain wire. they couldn't possibly stuff the braid onto the ground pin in a connector that small. unless "i" am clueless!

When I make my own cable using a shielded wire, I simply connect the shield on the NEMA 5-15 side. If you leave it floating and not connected to anything, it does nothing.

ok thanks. i guess it is probably connected then if it says shielded on the cable. i'll just go ahead and connect it. it was for a some lcd monitors. shielding actually does make a difference on those because the computers are so noisy. probably more so than for audio, just guessing.

i decided to disect one of these cables in the name of science! it is a 14/3 (standard?) copper non twisted. with a foil shield only. it has a drain wire. neither the shield or drain wire are connected to either side on the stock cable.

i used it for better connectors since i really didn't need much of a shield for one application. i read "one" place to connect the drain/shield to the iec side. i read "many" places to connect the drain/shield to the male plug side. so i did the former. the cable is not a very good cable of course. volex and quail are a little better. belden is much better.
