question about video cards - Page 2

I have 8800 GTS 512 SLI (yeah yeah SLI stinks but I bought a second used for $100 so it the cost-benefit was worth it till next upgrade time) and they still crush everything on full settings.

512 MB of memory is more than enough I don't know that I have ever seen a benchmark that the memory was an issue. You can probably get either ATI or Nvidia in that range and have a card that will last a while.

As a side please check if your PSU can handle the demands of the newer video card. In my case when I upgraded from a 128 MB to a 512 MB I upgraded the PSU. Also some video cards are fed power via a molex plug so make sure you have an unused plug to provide power to the new video card (or at least an splitter).

Its funny to run across this post, as I just placed an order for a 9800gt last night. Upgrading from my current 6600gt (yeah, I know, but it was free). Excellent job making me second guess myself head-fi!

OP, as far as the research I did goes, the two cards are fairly comparable. It all came down to the deal for me, since I'm not really a hardcore gamer and my games are stuff like Oblivion, Civ 4, GTA IV, etc. The 9800GT was slightly less expensive through Amazon (where my gift cards were from).

Cheers and good luck,
Zach
