Funny, I once predicts it might have a OLED screen. Apparently not. I was just reading today that people say the screens are great (they come on a phone now, I forget which one) but its very hard to see them outdoors.

oooh we're getting very close now

My guess is this thing is going to do three things well - run aps, server as a "reader" and play games. I dont see it being a high-powered tablet, more of a toy serving two markets well: Games for kids and books for the, well, older folk.

If it's just a cool gadget to sell wireless contracts for Verizon and At&T, it will not be a hit IMHO.

Without an "e-ink" display, it won't compete with e-readers either, as it will be hard on the eyes.

The facial recognition thing is something that Apple developed for iPhoto; it works great and probably has Homeland Security implications

It could still be an awesome wireless tabletop media server remote-controller, even without the full OS X operating system; think of it as the most awesome remote control in the world that could also be used to surf the internet. It could also be used to watch or listen to your content right on itself for a more portable or private media experience. I believe that some higher-end touch-screen remote controls go for $500 or so if not more.

Hopefully there will be a non-3g wifi version without the associated mandatory wireless contract.

I think this guy will sell because it's Apple. I find they have gotten that far into the market when they can start selling the brand. Lol, look at the current gen shuffle. One thing that I see for this is a bunch of accessories. Mice, keyboard, stands to make it upright, and who knows what else. A toy none the less, but it will sell like crazy! A little in-store advertising and it will fly off the shelves. $999 is nothing new to an Apple fan

No, Apple has to sell good products, not the brand. Though they don't get much press, Apple has had a number of notable failures over the years. Some recently, too.

As fashionable as it is to bash Apple, their products tend to be useful and well made. I never expected to spend $600 on a phone. But then I picked up an iPhone and knew it was far ahead of anything else on the market. Dismiss it as fashion, but since introduction, I've used an iPhone for several hours every day. It is possibly the most useful item I own.

Maybe the tablet will be as compelling as the iPhone. Or it might generate marginal interest like the Apple hi-fi, AppleTV, or even the Air. Those weren't anywhere as successful as hoped.

I do feel this will be black and white for the sales of this item. It's either going to be successful or just a huge marketing failure, 1k is a lot when you can get a Macbook Pro for an extra $500. The price needs to be lower if they really want this thing to "fly."

If it sells for $999 then it certainly won't compete with any of the E-readers out there. People wanting to read books will stay with the Kindle or Sony, or old-fashioned books.

I'm hoping the Apple Tablet, iPad, iSlate, or whatever the hell it's called will also be usable as a writing tablet like a Wacom, so designers can use it as a pen driven interface. I use a mouse for graphics as that is my preferred method, but many artists who actually draw or paint freehand use a Wacom. To incorporate that into the Apple Tablet would be a very useful feature. After all, the theme for this release is "color ink splashes" which to me not only symbolizes digital ink for news and current events (as opposed to newsprint), but art and design as well.

Oh I imagine Apple will continue to create great products. I've never once intended to bash Apple as Microsoft deserves the kick-in-the-arse. The Apple brand fits perfectly for so many people out there, it is usually the best product for them. What I'm saying is Apple has gotten far enough in the market to sell the brand, not that they should. It's just like so many companies do when they reach a certain kind of status.

I have a fairly neutral stance between Microsoft and Apple. I'm just awaiting someone else to join the group Maybe Google will become a stronger competitor soon enough. I await for reviews and definitely some display models at local shops for the 'iKit or iSlate or iTab or iScribe or iWhateveryouwantittobecalled"! I'm still looking for some time to use the new Wacom tablet I just got.

Yes, Wacom needs a challenger for their tablets. I would like to see more "Cintiq" competition out there. Those things really have a future as an input device. I think if Wacom and Apple go at it, we may see more of that technology sooner, rather than later.
