Airhead gain question again (this time not hissing)

So uh, I switched (back) to low gain a couple of weeks ago, and I'm quite sure that the bass has less impact.
I read another thread here about bass impact and gain too. I also know that gain setting is not supposed to alter sound. And I am very sure that is not a mental effect.
Any answers? Please?

Uh, how exactly? Isn't the whole point that you have no way to check this...

Measurably, the gain settings effect high frequency ringing to an order of magnitude so small I doubt a bat could hear it.
