hdcd compatible - Page 2

there aren't any pcdp's with HDCD decoding... But there are portable DVD players that have HDCD decoding. I'm actually looking into that.

wmp9...yea i noticed that a few cds i bought from hong kong (put out by warner and universal) are hdcds and the logo lights up when i play it using wmp9.

however, i was reading another thread that said hdcd must be decoded by a specially made digital filter/chip. how does the software (wmp9) do this if it's supposed to be a hardware thing? what does my computer do to the stream coming out of my soundcard (optical out-->onkyo-->athena f1's)?

edit: this is interesting. in a 2cd set, playing the first cd gives me the hdcd logo. playing the 2nd cd (by the same artist), no hdcd logo...coincidentally, the 2nd cd is also a vcd (2 videos and 4 audio tracks on it).

Well the decoding in the hardware is likely just embedded software, so I don't think it's really a big deal to do it in the software. Besides Microsoft bought Pacific Microsonics, who invented HDCD, so I'm sure they've done a proper job of implementing HDCD support in WMP9.

so... If I play an hdcd on WMP9 (mac, ibook) and use the usb out to a regular dac, does it still decode hdcd? I'm really confused as to how it will work. But I have a small little USB dac that came packaged from some MD recorder and I will give it a try. Don't know if I'll be able to tell if its working though...

Since HDCD multiplexes in up to four extra bits per sample, all your computers hardware/software must support 20bits samples for HDCD to make any sense.

yup...the optical out on my hercules digifire supports 20-bit output, so what i hear is actually hdcd material...it sounds great, but compared to non-hdcd? hard to tell since you can't override the hdcd setting.
