Finding Quality Music - Page 3

All I will say is try before you buy

The problem with Pitchfork is it's basically a marketing machine for a non-mainstream audience. It's like a lesser Rolling Stones that sycophantically caters to an indie cliché for the most part to the neglect of other genres. Just like its larger forefather sites or publications it has the ability to create mass publicity at the whims of a select few reviewers. Wavvves is one of the most terrible bits of music I have ever heard, yet a ringing endorsement by Pitchfork instantly rockets it into indie popularity.

That and the way their reviews wax lyrically in masturbatory prose, while obsessively writing of the cultural associations in general neglect of the actual melodic content. Rate Your Music and for the most part Sputnikmusic are infinitely better simply because they are user driven and don't confine themselves to niches.

Agree on RYM and user-generated reviews, even if we do get the obligatory neanderthal ones like "this album sukks balls" or "this rocks!!!! it's the greatest music EVAR made!!!" etc.

But I'd rather take my chances with 'real' people than some windbag with tenuous credentials pontificating about why X is good or bad and its social implications. All through history, most music criticism has been found to be inadequate or just plain stupid (in modern light).

On another note, I find Mark Prindle an occasional 'guilty pleasure' entertainment. If anything, he's pretty funny.

And god forbid they ever review a metal album not made by Mastodon.

Face it, unless you're a twenty-something in tight jeans and converse who is wasting their parents money on art school, Pitchfork's not for you. For everyone else, their contrarian act is strained and pretentious.
Chuck Taylors are awesome shoes that always look good, even if everyone in the room is wearing them. Thanks, but leave the Chucks out of this.

I haven't ever read a pitchfork review, and I'm not really familiar with the publication, just wanted to stick up for my fashion choices. Also, I wear regular jeans.

Lol, nothing against the shoes themselves

How about the i-tunes store and the new preview all function while paying attention to what others bought and then clicking on the links.

This is a good starting point. How many of these albums do you have?
