Finding Quality Music

Thread Starter
Hi, I tried the search function, but to no avail.
I was wondering if anyone could help me out as to where to find quality music outside the mainstream.
I just know there's so much out there that is not getting heavily publicized by multi-billion dollar record labels.

Any websites offering info on talented yet obscure bands would be a big help.

As far as my tastes, I enjoy all music except for the following: country, rap, hip-hop

Top Albums of All-time - Rate Your Music

This is a good starting point. How many of these albums do you have?

Another source for finding music:
allmusic

A good start is to look up top 100 albums of all time/or preference type threads on the steve hoffman forums. Then try listening to those artists on the internets before purchasing. Use allmusic as a quick way to find out which album you may want to start with for a particular artist. Do not forget to to get the info from steve hoffman forums which pressing has the best mastering (very important)!

Lol neutral milk hotel at 67th best album of all time

Lots of Brian Eno too, and no results for IMO actually listenable ambient

For music itself or how to search for music? I find this query rather odd. There is a wealth of options available to the modern music fan, including this very forum.

Check out this site: Latest Songs From MP3 & Music Blogs / The Hype Machine

I disagree about pitchfork being terrible, they actually post a lot of great music, it's just that some of their writing is terrible, and that too many people take their word as scripture. But besides that it can be a good resource.

If you are in College, or plan on going to college, become active at a student run radio station. That's the best way to find out about music.

You can stream my old student radio station to find new cool music at WUOG 90.5fm Check it out. (Student run radio station of Athens, GA. Alum includes Danger Mouse among others.)

It takes a bit of courage to listen to music...

Spotibot and Gnod's Music Map. With both you type in a band name and they come back with suggestions of other music you may like.

Spotibot - Spotify Playlist Generator

Music-Map - The tourist map of music

Pitchfork, unless you are a Tool fan or have the musical tastes of a 15 year old. It's probably not a good idea either if you hate wanky arts (humanities) students.
