Buying from Audiogon sellers with "0" feedback

Maybe you've had the same experience as me; trolling around Audiogon for that perfect CDP or DAC to at least temporarily complete your system, and "Holy shat! . . . there it is!"

You're so excited, because you've just found the perfect component to complement your system, and the price is slightly less than fair market value.... But wait. The seller has zero feedback. Do you dare pull the trigger on this purchase? What if this guy is just some common scammer?

Anyone else had this problem? What do you do? How do you live with yourself if you don't make the purchase, but then a fellow head-fier gets on the forum a few days later bragging about their awesome purchase?

Drats.

Just make sure to use paypal, and demand a tracking number

I wouldnt do it. If it was local and I could demo the product maybe. Too much bad stuff going on. If it was a stor you could use credit cards. If you do it buy thru paypal and use a major credit card. Amex always takes your side. I did that with some tubes and AMex refunded the money not paypal

I usually skip those. I'd rather pay a little more to purchase from a seller with good rep than to take a chance on a high-price item...

Zero feedback isn't really that big a deal with me, as I've personally sold many items (both here and Agon) and the percentage of folks who actually leave any feedback is probably only about 20 percent or so (at least for me). Hell, I've had buyers not even email me that they received the item on numerous occasions. Sometimes I'll wonder if it arrived safely, but figure if it didn't, I'd surely hear about that.

I think rather than the feedback, I'd look more toward the dollar amount and location its being shipped from. If it looks too good to be true...well, you know the rest.

Another thing to consider is that audiogon is ridiculously PRO-seller. Their claims process is completely out of whack. Any negative feedback against a seller actually has to be approved by them before it registers, really strange.

Buying through paypal with a major credit card is probably your best protection against fraud, AMEX is pretty baller when it comes to that sort of thing. Also, just be diligent and see if they have some feedback elsewhere. But as the saying goes: "If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't"

You can usually pull clues as to whether or not they're trying to scam you. Sometimes I'll ask if I can pick up the item before they even know I don't live anywhere near them. You can also request they send you a picture with the gear and a piece of paper saying "hi cherrybomb" to be sure they actually have the item for sale and didn't pull pictures from another person's auction.

I'll Skip Those "0" Sales almost everytime, but like El DOUG suggested and some trick questions, like n3rdling says might be worth a shot if the gear is really what you want, or need......good luck

I won't use Audiogon at all. eBay is more secure for buyers, and that's saying a lot considering their reputation. Never had a problem with eBay (both buying and selling) but my one and only transaction on Audiogon cost me $200 and I got nothing out of it. Never again.

audiongon is great, just be careful, not paranoid..

like mentioned already, paypal w/ amex is your best option... amex will do a chargeback on almost anything, lol
