Here My Dear- Marvin Gaye's "blood on the tracks"

My girlfriend really liked the song used in the Jadore commercial with Charlize Theron. The song is "a funky space reincarnation" off the album "here my dear"

Anyway she was bugging me if I had the song and I didn't so I found a used copy a few days ago.

I was blown away. It's a song cycle about the beginning middle and bitter end of a relationship.

It's a lot more direct, angry and obvious than Blood on the Tracks but arguably just as great.

I always liked Gaye, but thought of him more in the realm of great singles rather than albums, but this album and What's Going On" have me rethinking that.

Great stuff and the best find I have had in quite awhile..

I always found the lyrics on much of that record lacking, but in the current age of no-holds-barred R&B confession (say, R. Kelly or Ne-Yo), it's easy to see Gaye's divorce-court tell-all as some kind of genius. I don't think it matches Blood On The Tracks, however, if only because Dylan wrote songs that would sound great being interpreted, whereas a cover of something like Here, My Dear's "Anna's Song" or "Anger" might feel weird. "When Did You Stop Loving Me" would probably work, but not much else—at least, that's the way I hear it.

Now I know my old vinyl copy is around here somewhere…

It's much more specific about his exwife whereas Dylan's work transcends a specific person (I think most have a love that fit's the mold of "you're a big girl now)

I'm not sure you can even directly compare them given the vastly different musical styles. I'm also not sure it will age as well as tracks but it is musically and lyrically innovative especially compared to what else was coming from Motown at the time.

My comparison to tracks is based on how emotionally raw the topic is to both performers.

Perhaps my enthusiasm will cool over time but it did really surprise me compared to what I had come to expect from Gaye.

and I do think gaye can carry a tune a bit better than dylan

Kind of reminds me of discussions of Billie Holiday's last work "lady in satin" compared to her younger self. I have a friend who thinks it's her best work fully informed of the pain and misery her life had become. To me it's hard to hear how ragged her voice had become compared to the voice of "them there eyes"

Great album. Definitely under-appreciated. I got mine packaged on CD with In our Lifetime, which is about as good (maybe slightly better, maybe slightly lesser, I'm not even sure I can make that call).
