mW . . .

A question. I have senn hd580s. When I used my sharp mt90 md player to drive them, the sound wasn't too great. I built a cmoy, and the sound is now MUCH better. The MD has a 10 mW amp.

Russ's 25S review said that it drives the hd580s Fine, with a 9 mW amp.

Are mW not everything? How does it all work?

Amp output has to referenced to the load impedance. Unfortunately there is no standard at which this is measured and many times it is not even noted or only noted in the fine print.

Actually, the D-25 had a 9mw amp. Russ reviewed the D-25s, which was a special, non-consumer model made specially for airlines...it's not at all clear that the headphone amp power is the same. Having listened to the D-25s, I'm convinced it's not 9mw.

of course not! if you build the most powerful headphone amp in the world, but use absolutely lousy components, it will sound lousy. on the other hand, an amp with lower power but good components will sound much better, provided they have enough power to effectively power the phones in question. that help?
