home made headphone - need advice

Hi there,

I am thinking of building my own headphone as a personnal project.

I am new here and would like to get some help from this forum.

I am not a audiophile, just want to make myself my own headphones and if the project goes well, might consider of making a few for gift to friends and family.

All the mechanical parts: Arch, cup, pivots, are not the big deal, I do have access to a cnc machine and i can make those parts.

The big deal is the cup itself,material, volume of the air chamber, selecting good drivers, open or closed, find out a driver manufacturer willing to sell small qty and find out cords manufacturer too. I do have some audio technica ath-m40fs to start from, (i will only use the drivers).

My target is to build a headphone with the same quality sound that can be found in a $150-200 headphones in any stores.

So, once again

any help will be much appreciated.

Try contacting Head-Fi user, dbel84. He's built at least one from scratch and probably many more heavily modded. For that matter, several of the guys that participate regularly in the Orthodynamic Roundup thread have done the same:

Kind of strange to direct someone out of the DIY section for a DIY project, but that thread is on the cutting edge for building/re-building/modding headphones. Of course, the focus is orthodynamics, but it's probably applicable to dynamic headphones, too.

I've got some SFI drivers I'd gladly trade for a little CNC work.

On a related note, Sennheiser sells HD650 transducer assemblies for ~$70 each. The assembly contains the transducer and the surrounding bass-reflex (for lack of a better word) assembly. Considering that what you're buying is essentially the functional parts of a $400 set of headphones, it's a good deal.

A lot of people have added cups to their HD650s. From what I understand, the rule is: "The bigger, the better". Adding some damping material can help prevent internal reflections; I'm told that natrual wool is your best choice if you'd like to avoid using fiberglass (probably advisable.)

thanks for the orthodynamic thread's link, I went trough few pages of the thread and like you said, I can definitively learn a lot of things into that one. It will take me a while going through the 850+ pages but it will worth it to get some knowledge.

I have not been really active on the cnc forum lately but the machine is almost ready to be painted. I hope that the machine will be up running by February.

For your SFI drivers, could you send me the specs of them? Also, sennheiser kits, where i can find specs and info to order one? I went on their website and couldn't find anything.

There is much to say but little time - use ludoo's search tool in the ortho thread to look for SFI and fostex T50rp as well as thunderpants. You will read much..dB

I had forgotten about this thread until it was recently resurrected . iirc headfier Fitz had a set of AKG K400 drivers for sale not too long ago - these would be anexcellent dynamic option too ..dB

Design process is starting

Ok,

I will start to build my own first ever headphones using the drivers of my old audio-technica athm40fs. If some of you don't think it's a good idea, let me know and give me your advice on what I should use instead. I am really open on this i like a said, i am not an audiophile .......well yet but working on that.

there is some info shown on the box that a don't quite understand:

Frequency response
Maximum Input power
sensitivity
Impedance

Is anyone can give me a quick class about those specs.

I've joined few picture of the drivers that i'll be using. There is a resistance hooked up to the 2 pole of the driver. On the resistance, it's show d330 m41, the m is in a circle. Why they use a resistance between the to pole?

I started winding my own voice coils for some headphone drivers. Then I got laid off from work and lost interest in continuing on with the project. My idea was to have my dad make me some silver cans to hold them. Nice shiny silver.

Hi there,

 

Home made headphone project is still on table and even more serious than ever! I fixed myself a deadline , christmas is the target for having made my own headphone.

 

Well, I've been looking all arround to buy headphone speaker, but could not find something that i was please with. So, finally, I've decided to build the speaker as well, the whole thing hand made.

 

I've built myself a winding machine and soon, I willl start making some test on air coil. To be honest, I am not familiar with speaker technology and will recquire some advices as the project is going further in the process.

 

I was wondering if a build a form over google to see what a dream speaker for a headphone will look like, is some people will be interested to participate and fill my form??

 

Please, any comments /suggestions are welcome
