Time for a new music player, and ONLY a music player.... - Page 2

snowyweston, I think the PMP world zeitgeist is that the flagship in sound quality will often also have everything else packed in, unless you leave the PMP realm and go for an IC recorder-misused-for-playback, or the AMP3.

The price you pay is what the companies want to charge you for that degree of sound quality. If you insist on music-only in this day and age, you will find yourself surrounded by low-end players that have inferior sound quality. Let's say something like the Sansa Clip (plus). It's no doubt excellent, but between the Clip and every other flagship (the other 4 players on ABI's list), I'm not sure the Clip will be an absolute equal to them. It's up to the individual to say if your ears don't mind the differences. Plus none of them are significantly bigger than the HD1.

Being an owner of a working HD1, I think I can imagine you looking for a direct replacement. In theory you could get a Cowon D2+ or Creative Zen, the physical size is similar, and you can expand them to the 20GB you need for cheap. But those are mid-range players, and a lot of us who think we can hear the difference like to go one step up, and get one of those other 4 on the ABI list, none of which are as expensive as the HD1 was in its days! (I got mine used in Japan for $80)

A fabulous post there righteousball thank you. I get what you're saying - I had kind of resigned myself to such a hard truth a long time ago.

Oh how I wish my HD1's screen still worked - it still runs without fail - well into the 15 hour mark on a charge - but without a screen it's dead to me. Why Sony just can't just take the HD1 chassis, throw in a whole crapload of flash storage and update the screen and firmware is beyond me - I'd pay £400 for it all over again. But alas, unless Sony are spying on my posts and want to make me eat my words, I doubt that'll happen.

My fear is that I am quite discerning sound wise - and have been cursing myself for not fixing my D66s before flying out to Oz - I'd forgotten how much I hate wearing IEMs! I won't be buying new cans though, not when my D66s are well within DIY repair limits - but I just worry that the lower-range MP3 players could just as easily be trumped by a well specced mobile phone - I mean seriously, some of the Sony Ericson phones I've heard aren't bad - nothing special, but certainly just as entertaining as any gen. of Nano I've plugged myself into - and aren't they considered better sounding than the Clips? Or have I imagined that.

I guess I really should just go for a browse in town on the weekend - not that I've a clue where to even start looking in Radelaide!

the amp3 fits your description perfectly, except its space is kinda low (4 gb with micro sd slot) and it's interface is kind of ancient but the sound is exceptional.

I have to say - I like it already. But where the hell would you buy one? And are there any reviews (here or elsewhere) that aren't written in self-promoting pigeon-English?

you might like the iaudio 7. great sound and a small player. just a 16 gb limit..

Why not consider a Cowon Iaudio X5L 30gb? They can be had secondhand for next to nothing and the audio quality *looks around for incoming bricks* beats almost anything out there. Throw in a new battery from the 'bay for $15 and you have a player with great sound, line-in recording capabilities, long battery life (25+) and is Rockboxable. It's also very modable (Battery-mod, HD-mod, CF-mod, LOD-mod) if you're into that kind of stuff. Like me.

If not, get the Fuze.

There's a new Kenwood out in Japan that is only a music player. Storage space is up to 16gb with a micro sd slot. I want to check it out, but I'm pretty happy with my fuse. Not sure if you'd be able to get it in the US.

The new S series does have the speakers (I have the old S). I listened to the E series last ngiht and it sounds slgihtly different. The vocals are mroe forward, but it's at the expense of the soundstage. I also find slightly more hiss. On my phones (Denon C700, Denon D1000, JVC FX300) the hiss is minimal, but on sensitive ones, it could become unbearable. It also seems to have a little less power, but can still drive my Denon cans.

This IS the DAP to get in my opinion. All the sound of the X without the touch screen and useless features. If you can get one, then by all means.

I just picked up the Cowon 16gb iAudio 7 because I too wanted just a music player. I love it.
