Yay! I'll be in New York City 22nd-29th Dec! Second time in the US (spent a week in DC last year, all business though ), first time in new york, new york...

So what should I do? Where should I go? What should I eat? Should I get a weeks bus pass to get around or will the subway take me everywhere? What shows should I see? Broadway? Carnegie hall? Are any famous/funny comedians in new york over christmas? Someone told me the best view of the Statue of Liberty is on a boat! Which boat?

Well, obviously you are into music since you're on head-fi. Do you like jazz? If so I highly recommend going to a jazz club such as Village Vanguard, Birdland, Blue Note, Iridium, etc. If you go to the Village Vanguard, just around the corner is Small's jazz club which goes all night until like 5am. The U.S. is the birthplace of this art form and NY has the most extensive jazz scene in the country, not to be missed imo. Here's some links:

The Village Vanguard Web Site
Blue Note Jazz Club New York
Iridium Jazz Club New York City - NYC Manhattan
Birdland, The Jazz Corner of the World!

Jazz Clubs in New York City (link to all NY jazz clubs)

Wow, Mike Stern is playing at the Iridium from Dec. 23-27 plus three other greats...a tribute to Miles. This would be a fantastic show.

For Broadway, there's a ticket booth in the middle of Time's Square that sells day of show half price tickets to just about everything.

When I lived in Brooklyn I was pretty much broke so a favorite pastime was just walking the different Manhattan neighborhoods like So-Ho, The Village, Chinatown, Little Italy, East Village, etc. Brooklyn Heights is just across the Brooklyn Bridge. It's a beautiful neighborhood with nice restaurants and a promenade overlooking Manhattan and the NY harbor.

I'm not a big fan of the usual tourist attractions like the statue of liberty, but to each his own.

You won't need a bus pass. Just get a city map, and the Subway will take you anywhere you want to go. You can pick up a Subway map at any station. At Battery Park you can catch a ferry to Ellis Island or the Statue of Liberty, or a free ferry to and from Staten Island if you just want the views of the city off the water.

You can do some serious damage in a week if you do your research and study the map.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

You gotta hit the MOMA for the Tim Burton retrospective and I think the Brooklyn Museum is hosting the Who Shot Rock? Photography exhibit.

The best pizza in NYC is Sbarro.

You should eat at the Olive Garden at Times Square, they make the best Italian food.

I realize that was a joke, but the OP should check out Grimaldi's in Brooklyn for some awesome pizza.

I LOVE NYC!

Go to the MoMA and have lunch there. AMAZING!

Setup a tour with "Scott's Pizza Tours". You can read all about it on tripadvisor.com. Scott will take you through Greenwich village and SoHo where you'll taste three different styles of pizzas from three different pizzarias; including North America's OLDEST pizza place. SO MUCH FUN!

Definitely see a show. We saw "Hair" and it was fantastic!

LOTS of great vinyl/cd shopping available in Greenwich village!

Walk through Times Square at night; it's NOT a square. It's a STRIP. It's AMAZING!

For Italian food, there's a very nice little place on 44th and 6th...there's two of them actually, and they're literally across the street from each other. The one I'm talking about has "44th" in the name. GO THERE! I had the best Italian meal of my life there: gnocchi with meat sauce and fresh mozzarella. YUM! Oh man, I miss NYC!

Have an AWESOME time!

I've been to NYC twice. The Subway is great, so fast and cheap. Make sure you bring good footwear, we spent hours and hours walking. There is so much in NYC, the city seems to go on forever, it never ends. Oh, and bring lots of money, you'll need it.
