Favorite "exotic" meat?

"Exotic" can be interpreted in many ways, but what is your favorite "odd" meat (at least by local cultural standards). I'm in Chicago, and it's the typical out here: beef, pork, lamb, a large variety of seafood, chicken, other poultry such as turkey, duck, goose (duck and goose being a rarer treat, but still "common" enough here)

As far as a "mainstream" exotic, I'll have to say I love Bison. I think it's incredibly tasty, which is odd for how lean it normally is. As for on the more "odd" end, I'd say I love frog legs and the turtle I've had in turtle soup. I've also had alligator, which is tasty as well, but frog legs and turtle are better

As a vegetarian, my favourite odd meat is 'mock chicken' bean curd tofu.

It's incredibly tasty, you don't suffer the flavour of any dead animals at all in it!

I've made a few tofu dishes, but I've never ventured out of popular recipes on the internet to experiment on my own. Needless to say I have enjoyed ever tofu dish I've made, but it's only a small handful of dishes.

Tofu adapts very well to spices and other ingredients^^. There's still nothing like meat

Of coz. You should try stuffed bean curd with 3 delicacies, or double tofu boat; braised tofu in ginger with spinach; deep fried tofu in black bean sauce with asparagus shoots; chilli pickled kimchi with poached tofu ...the list is mouthwatering endless!

Of the birds, I'm not a fan of pheasant or quail, but ostrich is ok (tastes a little bit like veal).

I like boar. It's basically like pork, but tougher and sweeter. I've had deer and moose, but didn't find anything special about them. Bison is popular in my area, so I don't even consider it exotic.

Kangaroo basically tasted like beef the one time I tried it. I tried crocodile once too, but it was overcooked and tasteless.

Rat and rabbit, meh. I've had a few other rodent types too, but the exact ones escape me at the moment. Nothing to write home about in that entire category.

I like shark meat, sharkfin really doesn't have any taste. Swordfish is really good.

Sea cucumber is odd, but tasty when done right. Eel is good too. Sea Urchin is awful.

What is exotic? Every meat that I dont have a possibility to get daily is pretty exotic to mee. Moose is pretty good if done properly as it is pretty dry meat in its own. Lots of bacon straps wrapped around recommended. Reindeer is also really nice.


Of seafood, I LOVE rivercrabs. Clams are also very good.

Yeah - exotic varies from place to place. Frogs (田雞) not too exotic here. Neither is snake.

Had Ostrich - was ok but nothing special. My gf has tried Bear's Paw which is exotic by Chinese standards.

large pieces of shark fin. their exotic nature is due to the price of the fins.

I would recommend against consuming large pieces of shark more than 2 times a year due to their extreme toxic mercury level.

I don't know if you would include different cuts of less commonly consumed meats to be exotic, but here's my list from off the top of my head that I've eaten.

Beef tongue, pork intestines, blood tofu(meat? not sure), beef heart, chicken feet, rooster testicles, oxtail, tripe, rabbit, ostrich, quail, deer, scorpions, and oh toro(expensive belly cut).
I really want to try upper class Kobe beef(royalty grade is impossible to get) and yogurt pork. Both are supposed to be so tender that is practically melts in your mouth.

Shark fin soup has got to be one of my favorites. 30 dollars a bowl though.
