Upcoming trip to Russia (and 3 days after in Amsterdam)

Hi all, I will probably be in Amsterdam and Russia over the Christmas holidays (I'm from the US), and I'm wondering whether there is any particular gear I should be looking at when over there? Any tube suggestions (at better prices than in the States) or other "must sees" in either place, etc.? Any places to get some good deals on (genuine) products?

I should be in Moscow and Tver (and just three days, at the end, on a stop over in Amsterdam).

Thanks!

While you're in Russia, make sure you keep your passport (the real thing, not a copy) and entry papers with you, securely at all times. Cops in Russia have a thing for stopping people who look like tourists, asking them for papers, then demanding bribes if they're not carrying them.

Oh also, check out the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow. I've never really been one for going and seeing churches in every city I travel to, but this one is really special... it was torn down during the Cold War, then rebuilt after the fall of the Berlin Wall in all its original glory, except that everything is shiny and new instead of being centuries old - it's quite a sight.

Don't blow all your money in the Red Light District

Don't count on getting any good deals on electronics in Moscow. All the good stuff there is imported from Europe/Asia.

Just enjoy the country, it will be quite different than what you hear in the media.

I'm pretty sure it was torn down around world war 2. Also, most of the police officers are actually looking for illegal chechnyan immigrants. If you don't look like a chechnyan you should be fine.

Funny you should mention that - I was in Prague years ago at some bar, and these very, very rough looking Chechnyan guys walked in. They started hassling someone there, and after they left, the barkeep (it was a tiny bar) told me that she had had an old American friend who had been working in Prague for a while who, once, was in the bar, when the same guys came in and took a knife, went for the guy's crotch (to freak him out), and at the last minute, cut off his belt, so that his pants fell She told me these guys had no idea that I was an American since I looked like I was Armenian or Georgian or something like that. Guess I better keep my passport close to me after all

I'll actually be travelling with a friend who was from Russia, and we're visiting her folks in Moscow and Tver, so I don't think I'll end up in the red light district. Of course, I'll be on my own for three days in Amsterdam on the way home .... (JOKE!)
