Can I buy a smartphone and just use prepaid/pay as you go minutes? - Page 2

If you just want an Internet device to use on Wi-Fi, why not pick up an iPod Touch? You'd have to carry two devices, but you'd get the same functionality as the iPhone with no additional fees.

As for the Google phone... it is ridiculously tempting. Since I can get one for $99 with the rebate, it's a no-brainer. I'll add it as a second line on my AT&T account and see how it stacks up to my much-loved iPhone. I love the iPhone, but am willing to give Google a chance.

The only thing is that Apple is probably going to release a next gen iPhone in June or July 2010. Whether I buy one will depend on how well it stacks up againt the Google phone.

I think 2010 is going to be an excellent year for smartphones. Prices should fall and we'll get some terrific options.

Also, this will probably figure into whether I stick with Apple or go entirely with Linux. Part of the reason I use a MacBook is because of the iPhone. I do like OS X a lot, but my iPhone and MacBook are aging. If I can go entirely open source with a phone and laptop, I might do it.

I was thinking about the ipod touch, but I really wanted an android or winmo phone due to the native multi-tasking, higher resolution displays, and forthcoming flash support.

I just read that Verizon Wireless doesn't authorize smartphones for prepaid use, so I can't pick up a droid. (There is an unlocked GSM version, but it's much more expensive) AT&T requires data plans on all their subsidized smartphones now, and I hope the rule doesn't apply to unsubsized prepaid ones as well.

EDIT: I've been reading the AT&T forums, and apparently it's doable as long as it's not an iphone.

Yeah, I'm not happy. I went to a corporate store to switch, and apparently they converted my negative balance ($500+) into pay as you go minutes. The rep talked to AT&T for over half an hour, with no definite answer. I have to wait a month for the final bill, to see if they change my negative balance back. If not, I have to contact the rep again. (Who was actually a very nice fellow)
