If you just want an Internet device to use on Wi-Fi, why not pick up an iPod Touch? You'd have to carry two devices, but you'd get the same functionality as the iPhone with no additional fees.
As for the Google phone... it is ridiculously tempting. Since I can get one for $99 with the rebate, it's a no-brainer. I'll add it as a second line on my AT&T account and see how it stacks up to my much-loved iPhone. I love the iPhone, but am willing to give Google a chance.
The only thing is that Apple is probably going to release a next gen iPhone in June or July 2010. Whether I buy one will depend on how well it stacks up againt the Google phone.
I think 2010 is going to be an excellent year for smartphones. Prices should fall and we'll get some terrific options.
Also, this will probably figure into whether I stick with Apple or go entirely with Linux. Part of the reason I use a MacBook is because of the iPhone. I do like OS X a lot, but my iPhone and MacBook are aging. If I can go entirely open source with a phone and laptop, I might do it.
