HTC Droid Eris Vs. Sansa Fuze

Listening to the Fuze compared to the Droid Eris is a revelation as to how good the Droid Eris phone is. In a word substantially better than the Sansa fuze. All the sound seems to be there on both players but the Droide Eris sounds more open than The Sansa Fuze. By comparison the Fuze sound like you got some cotton stuffed in your ears where the Droid Eris does not. The body & detail seem the same.

There does not seem to be any coloration in either but the droid seems so much more open & spacious, Kind of like the Xonar Essense STX compared to the Xonar D2/PM but much more pronounced. The only problem With the Droid is limited volume output compared to the Fuze. There may be some songs that are too soft to play adaquately on the Droid that would play fine on the Fuze.

To be honest I never expected the Droid to out do the Sansa Fuze but it does by a good margine.

Doing a direct comparison with the Xonar STX souncard playing lossless files to the Droid Eris playing MP3 @ 320Kb/s is very very close in sound quality. Surprisingly good result for a device that is a phone first & media player second especially when the phone is playing lossy files compared to the computer playing lossless files.

Guess it's hard for anyone to believe that a cell phone can make a top notch portable media player. It does though. It is a bit expensive though & it needs a contract but it replaces my Sansa Fuze beautifully. Nothing wrong with the Fuze, keeping it as a backup. The HTC Droid Eris just sounds better to me.

That's encouraging, although it's slightly incredible since the HTC Hero isn't famed for its audio fidelity and the Eris is the same phone.

Have you heard one?? I think if you had you would change your tune. Is it perfect? No, but far better than you realize. There is a small amout of background noise but not enough to interfere with the music. It is just barely audible with my Ety ER4P's which block out virtually all other noise & appears only when the processor in the phone is doing somthing & no other sound is playing. I would say the noise is about 80db down from max output. The sound however is top notch for a portable media player.

I suppose though that I should qualify that as to just with playing music files. I don't plan on doing videos with it as I've heard that does suck but to me the audio is better than the Sansa Fuze enough to become my default music player.

Here is a review that talks somewhat about the sound quality of the Droid Eris.

Not quite the same phone, some of the buttons are moved which means a different motherboard & as such the audio componants can be different. I have not heard the Hero but the Droid Eris definately better than the Sansa Fuze sonically.

Did notice one strange behavior with the Droid Eris. No matter what the sensitivity of the headphones it doesn't play much louder. I have earphones that are 106db/mw & others with 115db/mw & the high sensitivity earphones play very little louder at all but when I plug them in to my computer the second pair will blast you to kingdom come when it is comfortable on the first set. It seams that the Droid Eris has some way of sensing the sensitivity of the earphones & adjusting accordingly. I have a 3rd pair that are 113db/mw @ these respond the same way.

The volume for the most part on the Droid Eris is adaquate but there really is not much gain in going to higher sensitivity earphones so don't waste your money with them on this phone.

Do you have anything to add besides keeping tabs? Have you tried these phones compared to anything else? I bet not.

Give me a few weeks and I'll try Fuze vs Nexus One.

Not the same phone but what the h***. May or may not have the same sound engine as the Droid Eris. Is worth a try though as it may better than the Fuze.

maybe you could open up your Droid Eris and tell us what hardware is inside Droid Eris,? because it's interesting why such an ordinary phone like Droid Eris sounds so much better than sansa fuze. it should be something extraordinary inside this little baby. I of course have in mind Droid Eris.

germanium, thank you.
Sooner or later, phones will replace a big chunk of mp3 player. It is better they pay attention to sound quality than gimmicks, isn't it?
