New Pop Pulse 1796!

post #1 of 11

This has been posted over in the Cryoparts forum, but I'm not sure just how much traffic it gets, so I figured I'd bring it over here. It seems as if there has only been one impression on it, and definitely no comparisons. Anybody interested in taking one for the team?

CryoParts Pop Pulse 1796 DAC

Optical, Coaxial, and USB 2.0 inputs. One set of high quality RCA analog outputs.

This DAC uses the CS8416 digital chip for the optical and S/PDIF inputs which supports bit depths up to 24bit and sampling rates up to 192KHz when connected via an optical or coaxial digital cable. The CM-108 USB receiving chip is used for the USB input, which supports up to 16bit/48KHz. When fed via USB, the datastream is coverted directly to I2S, which allows for the lowest jitter possible in this particular design. The DAC chip used is the very well regarded BB/TI PCM1796 which also supports 24bit/192KHz decoding.

Two piece aluminum enclosure keeps the power transformer and accompanying circuitry apart from the the DAC circuitry. This allows these two sections to be well isolated from each other and contributes to the DAC's low level of self noise and clarity of sound.

* Digital coaxial input level: 0.5vp-p
* Input impedance: 75ohm
* Digital optical input level: -15dBm
* Digital encoder: 24 bit / 192 KHz
* D/A converter: 24 bit / 192 KHz
* Audio output: 2.0v (1kHz, 0dB)
* USB Terminal input: USB 2.0 Standard
* S/N: 116dB
* Dynamic range: 118dB
* THD: .0015%
* Frequency response: 18Hz-20kHz
* Power supply: AC 230v/115v (+/- 10%) 50/60Hz
* Max power dissipation: 50W

Introductory special $239.95/each!

Order now! Will start shipping around August 1st.

jeez, when i was reading through that i was not expecting that small price tag... i'm anxious to hear what people have to say about this.

what other dac's share this d/a chip?

The Music Hall 25.2 uses the same chip and has been very well-received, although it also uses a tube output, unlike this DAC. This DAC looks very nice, though - well-built and attractive, with USB -> I2S, all for $240... tempting

I might just be the first one to bite the bullet on these...

I have the Citypulse which has the same dac and receiver, plus a discrete output and a balanced output, it also cost twice as much.

I don't really like it to be honest, it was never much of a jump from the Emu0404 for me, although my Emu was heavily heavily modded.

It has good punch and bass but the midrange never really comes alive for me. Bit dry and uninvolving?

Totally different DAC. Different designers, different implementation.

Yes, from what I understand, the DAC chip is only a VERY small part of how a DAC sounds.

Guitarplayer, you promised us reviews, let's see 'em!

Implementation of the circuit and skill of the designer are the most important factors in how a product performs. Parts are important, yes. However, implementation is the key.

Reviews--Soon, I hope. Professional reviewers work on their own schedule, and can't be hurried, I've tried...

Peace,

Anyone got this yet?

Looks like a great deal. I love the two enclosure... one enclosure deal going on. Nifty!

I've had it about 6 months.  Nice.  But I have little experience to compare against other offerings.
