Musical preference? Are you looking for a headphone that is geared towards being 'fun' like the JVC 1000/D7000 or a more 'accurate' closed studio monitoring headphone like the 4070/DT48.

The 4070 are nice, but not more. The CD3000 are even more nicer.

Thank you for sharing your view

Hi,
Well I am more about "serious music" esp. instrumentals.
The Denon 7000 and the Ultrasone are my favourites so far. I will go after christmal to listen to both of them.

Regards

Denon

I definitely vouch for the Denon AH-D7000.

I second the vote by mrarroyo for the LA headphones. The mods make a huge improvement. I haven't heard the Ultrasone 8 yet, but I prefer my LA7000s over the re-cabled HD800s, for sure.

Ultrasone's ED8 or ED9

There can't be one best closed headphone. All have different sound characteristics. What I have seen, the r10, la3000, Ed9 and the orpheus seem to be the top dogs. The la7000 and ed8 seem to follow. Don't flame me for this, I am still learning. Heck, I had never heard of the 4070 before this thread

Edition 8 are better than 9, and I would go with them. They are easily driven so it won't be a missed shot with virtually any amp.

You got the first part right, different fons = different characteristics or sound signatures (individual perception and preference). What do you base the rest of your post on? Have you heard all of the above or even any of the above? This is not a flame, but why would anyone comment and even try and rank headphones he has never heard before? This is one of the inherent problems with Headfi, people making definitive comments about headphones they have absolutely no first hand knowledge of.

It is fine to have an opinion, obviously subjective opinion regarding how headphones sound is all anyone can really offer, but that opinion should have some basis to be founded upon. It is also okay to base some/part of your opinion on what you may have absorbed through reading various other peoples' opinions, but to rank/qualify six or seven headphones serves litttle or no positive purpose unlesss you have actually heard them and have a valid opinion.

I love the sound of my ED8s and can thoughly recommend them as a great (closed) headphone, but I offer no opinion against any of the other top tier closed headphones as I have no basis/experience with any of them to comment, so I don't.

I vote for the 4070's,

followed by the IE8's,

then the W5000's;

But there's something to be said for portability:

My only experience are with the D5000's and the Edition 8's. The Edition 8's are really great closed cans.

Dude/ette, not to "flame", but I believe the Orpheus is an open headphone, "the best I've never heard"

My bad lol, I had another tab open of the Orpheus.

My vote...

To my ears and my listening experience, no closed headphone can beat the Denon AH-D7000s. In fact I haven't found an open headphone that beats them too...
