L3000?

R10?

Second hand would be something like what Ra97or suggests with the L3000 going for $3-3500 and the R10 going for around $6000 or an Ultrosone Edition9 or some of the older AudioTechnica woodies. Theres is at least one L3000 in the fs forum at the moment. Current production models would be something like the Ultrasone Ed8 that I personally like a lot, AudioTechnica W5000, JVC DX1000 or Dennon D5000/D7000. It all also depends on what music you want to listen and how you want your music to sound as the mentioned phones sound far from identical. Also they offer fairly differing degrees of actual isolation.

Oh forgot to mention the Stax 4070.

ED 8 and Pro 900 is a superb combo for me.

Complement eachother amazingly well. If you are just going to listen to music ED 8 may be sufficient. Pro 900 may speak to my audiophile brain more though. More transparent and the better soundstaging surely helps too.

ED 8 with Pro 900 and bass boost switch would be the ultimate combo that´s for sure lol

Edition 8. It's the closest thing to having a full set of tower speakers and subwoofer stuffed onto your head.

Never heard an L3000, the R10 are the best closed cans I've heard, followed not too far behind by the CD3000.

Ultrasone ftl

LA7000 is another great and not so expensive option

STAX 4070 Monitors! Listening to them now
After having owned/tried the w5000's, w11jpn, w10, pro900, r10's, l3000's.... Havent tried the la7000's but I doubt them, also I still want to listen to the ed8's as I might replace my esw10jpn's with them, I think I will like them, but not at the level of the 4070's.
The problem is that you will need to get another amp or a SRD-7 Pro to be able to use your current amp....

STAX 4070, or the upper-level Ultrasones (Ed8, Ed9)

ED8 or D7000

I have yet to listen to the L3000, Ed8, or the Ed9. Of the remaining R10, MarkL modded Denons, DX1000, W5000, I choose the MarkL modded Denon.

I'm using a pair of Ultrasone Edition 8 with a maxed WooAudio 2 and a Cambridge Audio Azur 840C.

Quite happy with the sound quality (and exceptional sound isolation) vs. my Sennheiser HD-650s, which I can't use much without bothering the rest of the family. I tried several Audio-Technica and Denon models, and either didn't like the sound, the isolation (i.e. weak/lack of) or they wouldn't fit correctly on my head and kept moving (the AT ones).

I do however find the idea of using closed electrostatics (i.e. the STAX 4070) intriguing. Have no idea what they sound like (muffled?)

You can try the GMP 8.35, or one of the Ultrasones, and you can save some money.

I heard Edition 8 this weekend, very impressive for a closed can. The tone is so right, and very well balanced. L3000 is all about midrange when pair with tube amp. I mean If you pair L3000 with tube amp, mostly you get is big thick midrange that overpower everything else. L3000 need SS or Hybrid inorder to sound right. On the other hand ED8 is not very amp dependent, it soun d good with pretty much anything.
