Item: Sennheiser HD540 Reference II
Location: Australia
Item Condition: Good
Reason for selling: Lack of use, need the space
Price and price conditions: $200AUD + Postage
Extra Info: Purchased new in circa 1991. Well looked after with perhaps 100 hours only. They have always been stored carefully, however age has decayed some of the perishable parts. I intended to restore these (all these parts are still replaceable quite cheaply) but never got around to it.
Performance is 100%, and surprisingly close to my HD600s. The items of mention are as follows:
I am selling as is (with cable) as an honest working pair of headphones that rival some modern designs extremely well. Great as your everyday pair or a restoration project. The Series II were known for their improved bass response, although I've never auditioned the earlier model.

- Headband has some wear as pictured. Replacements available from Senn.
- Foams on the ear side worn as pictured
- Removed decayed foam on outside of driver (see outer pic, now just straight to the driver. This is actually a 'mod' some people do to crispen (is that even a word!?) the tonality.
- Earpads - as with older cans could do with replacement - readily available.
- Cable - standard is included but the right driver is intermittent with the cable, works 100% when you hold the plug in, and 50% of the time when you don't. You can jiggle it. Replacement cables are available of course.
