PMP with largest memory storage?

As I rip CDs to lossless and own a rather impressive collection, I've run out space of a 160gb + 120gb ipods. Any recommendations?

Open it up and put in a new hard drive?

Biggest single PMP would be the Archos 7, with 320GB.

iirc the Archos 5 (and probably the 7 as well) are advertised at the main Archos website as having 500GB drives as an option so...

Not sure I'd care to put more than that on a device due to the frustration I'd experience with "losing" all that data if something goes wrong. Not that I'd be losing anything since I do still have the original CDs in storage but, even so, that's a considerable amount of time and effort involved, and I've done it more than a few times and ended up with a bricked/dead device.

These days, I've totally given up on such massive collections on the go. I had the FLAC originals on DVD+R if needed, I've got tons of them already on the hard drive, and an entirely separate hard drive that holds pretty much all of it in LAME V0 mp3 format for the portables. I've got a 4GB Fuze which, to be honest, is more than enough for the limited periods of time I'm out and about away from home, and I'm planning to get a 16GB microSD card whenever I can find a decent price on one.

20GB is enough...

Is that some US special, haven't heard about the 500GB Archos in Europe?

I think for most people and certainly that is the case for me it is not a question not having enough music for the time you are away (or for the time a charge lasts) because 4GB og 20 GB should be plenty. The problems is having to choose beforehand what you might fancy listening to while away and then the hassle of having to fill the unit each time. I wnat it all with me so I can listen to exactly what I fancy right now and not what I thought I might fancy 3 days ago when I filled the unit.

Yah, we all know the conundrum these days: too much in the library, can't take it all with us.

That's one reason more and more devices are becoming wireless... the potential for accessing your home library of content on the go is becoming more and more common. If someone came out with a 3G-capable DAP - seriously - I doubt internal storage capacity would even matter anymore because I'd have that ability anyplace to access/stream my home library to the device.

Wi-Fi is nice, and WiMAX is useful too, but 3G/4G would be far more useful in many more ways.

It'll happen... in time.

Apple iPhone. Jailbreak it, hack together a .FTP program/media player, and you're done.

Alternately, replace "iPhone" with "Droid" and remove the jailbreaking step.

Of course, if you haven't got the iPhone, you likely don't have an unlimited data plan. And if you don't have an unlimited data plan, the cost will kill you.

Buy a netbook and a Pico if having that much choice on the go is that important to you.

I get lost when I have more than 75 albums on my ipod.

There are methods of streaming from a home collection on today's phones and even yesterday's phones. Still the interface sucks - usually a web interface like on Twonky Server. There needs to be a way to just search and browse just like you were at home. I suppose we could all just sign up for Rhapsody if they provide a 256kbps stream. I think they only do to Squeezeboxes currently.

Still I need some backup storage for the subway.
