Stuck on one pair

Argh, I have this problem. Everytime I get new headphones, my old pair end up getting put away and never touched again...

Why is it some people will have many headphones and be able to use them all, when I only want ONE pair of headphones?

Do they use them all,I doubt it.
Most have a favorite phone and the others just gather dust.

I can't imagine myself having multiple pairs for different genre's. I think that's just silly. Some people seem to be able to do it but I guess that's just them. I think it's better to sell off multiple pairs and buy one single completely awesome set.

I have two pairs because I need some headphones to bring to LAN parties that aren't worth an arm and a leg :|

What is this magical ONE headphone of yours that is able to do it all?

If you listen to a variety of genres and music styles you are very likely going to end up making use of multiple pairs of headphones. I have yet to hear a "one" headphone that can do it all for my music. A headphone that is great for power rock may not be the right thing for classical or acoustic jazz. A detailed neutral and airy headphone that is amazing with acoustic may not have the right feel and sound for rock.

My current trio of headphones (HD600, D2000, SR60) barely handle the range of music that I listen to. They all get used depending on what music I'm listening to. If I only listened to specific style of music I might be able to go to one headphone. But my music tastes range from small acoustic, full scale classical orchestra, pipe organ, jazz, blues rock, jam rock, power rock, and others. For that range it means multiple headphones.

I picked up a pair of HD650s yesterday yet right now I'm listening to what I had before [K701s].

I need to seriously consider selling unloved stuff.

OP, do what Frasey does. Buy and test and sell it if it doesn't do things significantly differently to your current cans.

I normally have 4 that I use pretty often:

Closed home (for when I need isolation or if I don't want to leak sound)
Open home (I much prefer open cans to closed, for when I'm alone)
Portable
Headset (for gaming)

I can't compete with the collection ourfpshero has and I'm not even going to try, but I have a few different pair and I use all of them. SE530 for public areas, PK1's for work as I have to be able to at least hear my phone, Grado 325 & Ultrasone 2500 for rock/metal. Grado is better for the faster stuff and the 2500's are for when I want a good thump. The GMP 8.35D's are brilliant for Jazz and Orchestral. I also have a pair of Ultrasone 900's on the way and I'll see what they're good at after I've used them for a while.

I just picked up Denon 2k's and I'm 100% happy with them. I don't foresee getting another pair unless these break. I use the ad700's for skype and games and thats about it.

I have my SRH840, but barely use them at home as they are inferior to my AD1000PRM, but I do use them outside.

To some extent it might be that when you get a new pair you enjoy the difference so much so you forget about the old pair. If you still go back and listen to the old ones after a while to find you don't like that sound anymore, there's nothing wrong with that. Just the same that there's nothing wrong with the people to have different set ups for different music; if they can engage with the music better that way then surely it can only be good, the same way as it's good for you if you can enjoy it all with just the one set. If you can do it that way it'll probably save you some money anyway, so perhaps you should be even more thankful you don't need multiple set ups to enjoy your music

I switch up my headphones quite a lot. On some days, I'll wake up and go "I want to listen to this today." For the entire day or maybe even the next few days I would listen to just that headphone. It's a different experience because I have such drastically different headphones/earphones.

I used to have k701 and Grado 225 and listened to them close to equally. I sometimes wish I had never sold the k701.

I use them all quite regulary, but as I'm a shuffleplay junky, I mostly use my "always sounds right" modded MS Pro. If I didn't have that thing, I'd propably would have to join the (less exciting) team HD600.

My K701 and HD650's are obviously very different headphones which sound good with different type of genres. To me it's refreshing to have a drastic change of sound signature as I see fit, while maintaining that reference-level detail and sound quality. I also have a SRH840 around which I typically use very late at night when open headphones can be distracting to others. Then there is AD700 for gaming (for soundstage and long term comfort, mainly), HD238's for my secondary computer for unamped use, and SE530/PFE/ES7/PK2 for various portable needs.
