when pricing used gear

Thread Starter
Check the prices of new first. What you paid is irrelevant.

For example, with an easy Google search right now, 12-9-09 yoiu can find Ultrasone HFI-780s for $189, brand new, including shipping.

Denon D2000s are selling for $214. New, including shipping.

Want to make your used stuff attractive to us? Remember we are not getting a recipt, a warranty or anyting. Just a pretty box (maybe) and your discarded gear you no longer want.

So - whenever I offer stuff fort sale it is half off the current street price.

On this site though it seems like people expect zero depreciation. Sorry folks it don't work that way.

Depreciation is not automatically calculated with a fixed percentage you randomly draw up in your mind; how much you depreciate an item in value depends on variables like: age, condition, and desirability. Do you expect half off of a car that's 3 months old and in mint condition? No. You'll get more than that even if it has a salvage title. Short term depreciation will run around 15-20%, less if it's highly desirable. For long term, depreciation for headphones usually flattens out at a much higher residual value than other items because these items typically function and perform the same as new, and if they're well taken care of, look the same as new too.

Some people price their items high here (e.g. a certain user trying to pawn off AD700s for more than they paid) but to expect an automatic 50% deduction just because it's used is ridiculous. If you want to sell your stuff for that, that's your prerogative but don't expect others to do the same just because that's what your policy is.

every seller is different- every buyer is different.
some peeps pay a lot for their equipment and have a hard time letting them go for a lot less. on the other hand, some sellers sell at very low prices to make a quick sale!

around here higher end stuff retains value well, low end stuff tanks in value. an item might be hard to obtain for some peeps, and these same peeps might pay a lot to get ahold of it! think international buyers. i have personally been offered retail + shipping on some of my used gear so an international headfi-er could acquire it

Totally depends on the item - some depreciate in value, others appreciate in value - think Grado HP1000.

My rule of thumb whenever I sell something - do a quick search on this forum for what others have sold for and knock off an extra $20. Usually, I get to sell stuff quickly and use the money to buy more stuff.

As for the OP : Your viewpoint is interesting, especially so as you have 0 sold items here.

These are private sales. People can charge what they want, and either people will buy or not. Depending on the item and timing, its value can go up, stay the same or near-about, or depreciate very quickly. If you don't like how something is priced, don't buy it.

Since I moved this thread out of the FS forums, I'm going to digress for a minute, and say that the amount of thread-crapping about prices in people's FS threads is getting out of control. Please read the rules, folks. There is no discussion allowed. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. The seller may or may not get the message if he's not getting pms. It's not your business to comment on it in the thread.

Most gear that I've seen is going for 75-85% mint. That seems pretty fair to me. Of course, some items like the HF2 will be well about this for quite some time, or even above what was paid (let us not discuss the ethics involving this), because they are rare, collectible and thus highly sought after.

You make the rules for your own sale, that's about it.

Hey, Boomana. What is official policy regarding posting ebay sales? I've been seeing a lot of those lately, and I'm not sure if that's ok. Also, are auction threads and OBO allowed?
Other things really don't depreciate. Think RS-1. They have sold for $700 new since before head-fi. I am sure that they have been going for around $500 used since head-fi started, and I don't expect a change in that.

Also, I'd like to point out that people can ask whatever they want and you can offer whatever you want. This isn't ebay. You can PM every single person in the FS forums and offer them 1/2 of street price if you want. Just don't expect to get a lot.

Really, I don't even understand the point of this thread. the seller can charge whatever they want and if you don't agree with their price, then just don't buy it from them.

To the OP there's no good reason why you should be posting here about how much another person should charge for their items that they want to sell. if you can find a better price somewhere else, go buy it there.

But please don't... at least not me, I don't react well to low-ball offers.

I'm personally against posting ebay sales. I'm very against auction threads. Right now there are no rules against them. I don't like ICs that are masked silent auctions, though there are a few, legitimate reasons for ICs, mostly in cases of rare or one-of-a-kind items, when there's no real market value established, and/or the seller is trying to gauge or decide if he or she really wants to sell. I think OBO along with a price is fine (as in $600 OBO), but just to put something up with no price and take bids kinda pisses me off. It is allowed at this time, and as I said, these are private sales. I simply to choose never to deal with those members.

Remind me to offer $20 for the next amp you put up FS.

the FS forum isn't perfect but it's free, which is great. think of a'gon or ebay. if you sell there, you pay fees. so take the good with the bad.
I'm with FallenAngel. Find the approximate market price and undercut it slightly. That moves gear pretty fast, I don't mind the slight loss and buyers are happy with getting a good deal. Also, try to give an "out the door" price that includes the PayPal fee and shipping. No one likes having extras tacked on and it makes negotiation simple.

not to mention that asking for paypal fees is against paypal's terms and could get your account cancelled!
