In what way(s) are you contributing to the betterment of mankind?

Nothing really. I help out schoolmates, give advice, post on forums to make people laugh, and show respect when respect is due. This is actually quite a bit considering I'm egoist with an earned disdain for humanity. (myself included) Props to those who are willing to give themselves to the betterment of mankind, something I will never do.

I am (just accepted tonight) an intern for OFA (Organizing for America), doing what I feel is my civil duty to work for the government. I am pushing the Liberty movement by having debates around my campus:Socialism vs Capitalism. I do about 300 hours of community service a year, doing various things like feeding the homeless for Midnight Mission. I canvas and phonebank for homosexual rights. I write letters to my congressmen once a month with ideas and critiques on their voting. I run voter registration drives when that time of the year comes.

I do not accept the status quo and let others know it often.

Working with professors and other students in a program that tries to shorten the "science gap" in america.

Working on improving myself as a person, the only worthy pursuit IMO, as everything "good" comes from that.

I volunteer with a number of organisations doing everything from helping struggling children, to a local music venue that provides low cost entertainment in the inner city, to name the two I'm most actively a part of. Other than that, I work to advocate for the rights of the low income families living in Winnipeg and Canada, and am part of a group that promotes active transportation in the city.

I'm sad to say I really haven't contributed much at all. I keep hearing of all the cutbacks in my local community due to the lack of finances and I always wondered what I could do to help but since I've not really been one to give of my time, money or efforts in the past, am a bit clueless as to how to go about trying to create a change for the better.

I'm doing things at a micro scale to try and save the environment, which in turn will benefit all. And when I say "micro" I do mean micro. I just try and conserve water and electricity and recycle as much as I can.

The reason I asked the question is just this morning I heard the governor of the state (Washington) talking about how so much had to be cut from the budget and now kindergarten classes will increase in size. So, again, money's being cut from the education system. Take away music; take away PE; make the classes huge; higher fewer teachers; make the students share books; it just sickens me.

I guess the thing to do is to get involved. But how?

Any suggestions?

I consume beer which might otherwise be imbibed by somebody else who would then drive their truck and crash it into a glass room filled with premature babies.

Soup kitchens, mentoring is the boys and girls club, if youre in washington, i dont know where you live, but i know in oregon there are beach clean ups fairly often, could always adopt a road, volunteer in those schools, sometimes they want you to have a kid there, but it doesnt hurt to ask, unless you do have children then its easy, national parks will usually accept volunteers to help clean and such as well, or helping with the special olympics. I dunno, thats just a quick list off the top of my head, if you really want to help out, its not as hard as some think.

good luck

First post here. Being only young I've not done much to make a difference yet. But my most important goal is to improve myself, and from there to contribute in whatever way I can to the human race. Helping a friend out in a difficult situation, helping a random stranger I don't know and just trying to cheer people up. Every little helps, as they say.
