iPod Classic and 5G Buffer

Thread Starter
I currently use an iPod Classic 120GB, but am not able to use ALAC files on it as they tend to skip. Having read into this, I'm led to believe that the Classic only has a 32MB buffer, whereas previous iPods (the 5G for example) have a 64MB buffer and that this means older iPods are less likely to skip when playing ALAC files.

I have found someone selling "hybrid" iPods that are made of mainly new parts, including a 5G logic board (apparently meaning you keep the superior Wolfson audio chip) and an 80GB 6G HDD. Does this mean that these hybrid iPods will have the 5G buffer or the 6G buffer ie is the buffer on the logic board or in the HDD?

Thanks

Not all 5th gens had the bigger buffer. IIRC, it was only the 60 and 80GB models (that's why they have a different Rockbox port than the 30GB 5th gens). The hybrid thing might work if the guy is using the 60 and 80GB logic boards.

Honestly, I don't think it's a buffer issue as much as it is a firmware issue. My rockboxed ipods (4th gens) and even my Clip+ play FLAC fine. Not sure about their buffer sizes though. Unless you're unhappy with your Classic, I'd say get a 60GB or 80GB 5th gen off ebay and go that route. If enough people cared about lossless and higher bitrate audio, Apple would've fixed this a long time ago.
