Dearest Head-Fi Community,
I am currently in possession of a most sublime sounding compact disc player, the Resolution Audio Opus 21 with Great Northern Sound Company "Reference" modifications.
At this very moment in time I actually own two of these, both with the identical modifications. I originally purchased the first a couple of years ago from a good friend of mine and fellow music lover. He happened to adore this source, but sold it on the basis he just sunk over twenty thousand pounds on Esoteric hardware!
After spending a few weeks with the Opus 21 I had purchased used, I was truly in love. Very few digital sources I had the pleasure of listening to over my career in the high-fidelity world sounded like this unassuming, yet gorgeous, unit! The only units I have heard that I found more emotionally engaging make the Opus 21 an incredible bargin...
At the time I was looking to put together a system which I knew provided me with absolute aural nirvana, in which I would happily live with for a great deal of time to come. I had simply grown tired of constantly hoping to buy something "better" and simply go back to listening to all the music I love so dearly. This was the digital front end I had settled on!
So what is this unit I am selling? Well, I am crazy about my personal possessions. Literally crazy, or at least I was. The Opus 21 I have been using is in immaculate condition, I care for it like a child... along with my other treasured possessions. Due to my stupidly high standards, buying second hand equipment does generally not work well for me. As even if it appears and is pristine, I am still left with thought it is not new!
I went ahead and decided to purchase a brand new Resolution Audio Opus 21 from Kevin Scott at Definitive Audio here in the UK. I then proceeded to send the unit to the immensely professional Steve Huntley at GNSC for his team of perfectionists to work their magic on this unit.
Since investing a sizable sum - on purchasing, FedEx-ing, modifying, FedEx-ing plus import tax - my ridiculous obsession with my possessions has wavered and I am left with a wooden crate, in which lies a truly wonderful piece of electronic and mechanical art, that I have not once used nor intend to.
Hence my reason to be offering it for sale here at Head-Fi!
Now this unit cost me a great deal of money. Cost of unit (2995 GBP), plus modifications (1500 USD), plus shipping and import tax... came to around 4450 GBP! But I know it is worth evey last single penny... this undoubtedly is one beautiful sounding CD player and for me there nothing in this price bracket that begins to compete.
As it has has never been used and has seen a great variety of substantially upgraded components, I would think it more than fair to sell for the same price a new stock unit does. At time of writing the stock unit retails at 2995 GBP here in the United Kingdom.
I am asking for 2995 GBP for this majestic CD player as I wave goodbye to 1455 GBP completely wasted... Audiophilia, there should be a law against the whole thing!
Other interesting information... the unit for sale has the beautiful front plates with black at the top with the silver crescent below. As wanted to make clear this is 220-240V AC unit!
With this unit I also purchased from GNSC a brand new Audience Au24 Din-to-RCA 1 meter cable. This of course allows you to get the very best sound from the Opus 21, as the consensus is the DIN output on the unit is by the smallest of margins the greatest. The cable remains brand new and cost 475 GBP. I am asking 325 GBP for the cable... It would be a shame to break the two apart from one another, the Audience Au24 interconnects are truly special and the cable comes very highly recommended from Steve Huntley at GNSC for this particular CD player.
Finally regarding pictures, I have not yet even opened the crate as if I were to purchase it I would want to be the first to do so. Upon request I am happy to take pictures of the unit itself. The crate incidentally was kept in a smoke, pet, child and dust-free environment where temperature and moisture was maintained at preferable levels for storing such an item.
All the very best,
James Hawkes
