iPod Touch with no music

I just ordered an iPod touch. However, all my friends think I am crazy, as I only got 8GB. I told them I have no intention of putting more than a couple of albums on it (favorites of mine just to have), and that I really bought it as a portable gaming/Internet device/ebook reader for my upcoming winter break in India. They still think I am crazy, even though I also explained I was perfectly happy with my Cowon S9.

This all made me wonder how many of you out there are using an iPod touch more for apps than music? Quite frankly, I think it is one of the biggest bargains out there as a multipurpose device, with apps that have 200 classic books for $2 and whatnot. Not to mention the miniaturized but still very usable browser.

I am normally one who dislikes apple and iPods, but I have to admit this and the iPhone are very useful

Ironically I had originally bought my 8 gig touch for the singular purpose of using it as a handheld remote for a mac mini based media server. The touch with the ipeng app and a squeezebox made a great combination. The internet browser/app side was a nice bonus.

Now however I find myself using it more and more as a daily player and as such the 8 gigs is no longer enough. So going to give my 8 gigger to my dad who wants one and get my self a refurb 32 gig if/when they come back in stock again.

Cheers.

I used to have a 16gb touch, while it was good for all the apps and the very good internet access when a Wifi point was nearby, I felt for actual gaming a Nintendo DS/PSP is far better and for other apps in general the battery just died too fast. I played Guitar Rock Hero or something like that and after just 40 minutes the battery had gone from 97% to about 24%. Even using the web killed the battery at a gigantic rate, and this was a brand new sealed iPod so the battery wasn't already used up or anything.

Having built in memory/non expandable via cards is also VERY annoying after a while if the player isn't over 30gb or higher in Size.

I have a 32GB Touch (2g) that's played music for...oh I'd say about 5 minutes (just to test!). I actually bought it as a Squeezebox remote control (ipeng), but now mainly use it for games & email/browsing. It's perfect for playing with whilst feeding our little'un her bottle, because I can operate it with one hand. I did go for the 32GB version though, more for resale value than anything else. I use a Cowon D2 as my portable source, but I am considering getting a LOD for the Touch to use it with the Pico Slim amp I have on order, as I'm hoping maybe it'll sound better than the hp out from the D2.

So I do not want to start a new thread for this story, but you will it funny:

I just got the Touch, and was done putting my favorite 5 or so albums on it so that if I was ever without my Cowon, I could still play some music. Well, I though I would try the SQ, so I went in and found a song, and then double clicked to play. Right before it played, I realized I did not plug my headphones in, and thus I set myself up to expect silence. Wrong. I jumped out of bed and almost tripped, as the iPod which I had put on the pillow right next to my ear blasted at full volume out of its built in speaker.

If you ever needed to know how to make a 19 year old fall out of bed, there it is. There should be a warning for things with built in speakers.

i have a 16 gigabyte player, but wish I had gone for the 8. My music collection is huge, but obviously I only carry albums I really want to hear. Then, the rest is devoted to dictionary, office and a few stupid games. for gaming, i always have it plugged into the wall as the battery would run out in 2,5 hours or so for certain games like the Quest (amazing RPG) or even less for other ones.

if you want the best sound, turn off wifi (especially if using with an amp and lod), and reset the ipod (hold the top button for 5 seconds till the turn off slider appears, then slide) as a headphone memory can build up.

enjoy!
