HF-1 mods for cups

Hi,

So I spent 2+ years in Mongolia. I came back somewhat recently and was rifling through my stuff and found my HF-1s. Seems like my brother didn't pack them that well and the foam cups are a bit messed up. The pleather headband is also a bit messed up. Drivers, thankfully, still seem to be fine. Pleather headband is mostly a cosmetic issue but the bowls are definitely a sound issue.

What suggestions do you guys have for foam/cups for the HF-1s particularly with mods. I've done a few searches and not turned up much more than the article at headwize. Is the search function not working well?

I'm alright with DIY stuff.

You're in good hands, lot's of consumer mods available for Grado's these days.

JMoney Audio makes Grado headbands that he sells on his website and on ebay. They're made of quality lambskin, and he has the V2 and the V3, with the V2 having similiar dimensions to the original Grado headband if not slightly wider, whereas the V3 is much much wider. They're a great value at the price Jeremy offers them, highly recommended.

I'd opt for the V2 as they'll more closely match the dimensions of the original, the new V3 is very wide and though more comfortable I feel aesthetically not as good looking for your particular headphone

For the foam pads, there a lot of dealers who sell replacements, like Todd over @ TTVJ. In terms of the HF-1, you can opt for the original pads, or you can experiment with other pads such as the Sennheiser HD414 yellow pads (you can find these on eBay)...people generally have great results with this after doing a quarter-mod to the pads, which is cutting out a quarter size hole in the middle of the pad.

There are also the Jumbo pads from the GS1000, but that completely changes the sound signature. And there are the classic flats that only TTVJ sells, but I'm not sure if they'll fit the HF-1 seeing as how they're a bit bassy.

In terms of the actual cup...are you looking for a replacement to the black plastic with the HF-1 button? Jmoney sells wood cups..again at a pretty decent price

Hey,

No, not looking for an actual replacement to the cup. Just the foam.

I saw Jmoney's ebay store but he was only selling v3s. Also on his website there was really only mention of the v3. It looks like a classy upgrade.

Any leather bowls/pads for HF-1s available? Or Grados in general?

I'm playing over an Alien DAC 1.1 and a SOHA.

Thanks again, trying to reacquaint myself to the game after 2+years. Seems like there are new revisions of alien, soha, and ckiii. Darn, I still have boards from the old revisions I haven't soldered.

No leather pads specifically for Grado, but you can always do the Headphile mod that allows you to attach Beyer DT770/DT880/DT990 pads to them and then order a pair of Jmoney leather Beyer pads and pow, you got yourself some leatherfied HF-1s.

GarlicKnots, if the foam pads are not torn just compressed then carefully and slowly remove them and wash them in lukewarm water w/ soft soap. Rinse thoroughly and air dry overnight.

Not only will the pads come back to life but they will be softer. Cheers!
