If you're using K701 with a portable amp, help me please!?

ok, this is gonna be long and can be confusing. please dont hate me.

in a few weeks, i am going to purchase k701 (or k702), and i'm also going to purchase a portable amp to drive k701 and im716. yea yea, i know more powerful desktops are better for k701 but i, in the past, was very satisfied with the sound of dt990, hd600 and hd650 driven by pico, d3 python and 3move. so i'm going to try the k701 with a portable amp.

i decided to give k701 a try because, from what i've read here, it seemed like they were the cans that sounded the closest to im716's sound signature which i LOVE.
i am currently using headstage lyrix amp with im716 but it is a little too big to bundle with my cowon d2 (3"x2").

so... i need to pick a portable amp that is powerful enough to drive k701, and be small enough to be bundled with cowon d2.
i do not touch any of the EQs and effects on my cowon d2, and i like its neutral sound. k701 is supposed to be neutral and transparent. i need the amp to be neutral sounding and transparent also.

i've narrowed the candidates to
1. pico: number 1 candidate because i know how good it sounded with other big cans. i just dont know how it will sound with k701. a little smaller than cowon d2. i really really want the amp to be the same size or a little bigger than cowon d2.
2. predator: probably the best size-wise. supposedly more bass quantity than pico which may be good with k701.
3. p51 mustang : more bass quantity than pico supposedly again. the long thread proves how good of an amp it is. a lot smaller than cowon d2 tho.
4. hornet: good length and width but a little thick? maybe too much bass for my taste?
5. d3 python: loved it when i used it with hd600 but a little too big to bundle with cowon d2.
6. any other options?

which one has the most power to drive big cans?
whether you have any experience with k701+portable amps or not, any kind of suggestions and/or recommendations will be highly appreciated.
thank you for reading my messy writing.

Where in NJ are you? I certainly can let you listen to my 701s with a Predator, an iQube, a Mini3, and a Shadow.

I've never used the 701 with a portable amp ... could do I guess.

Feel free to PM.

The Predator is perfect with the D2, size and SQ wise, plus Ray will color match it for you. This was my original rig -- Ray said I was the first asking for that particular red/black combo.

I run my pair with the TTVJ tube Hybrid portable.
A very musical and synergistic pairing. YMMV.

forget about portable. get a proper desktop to run 701. or look for some other headphones

Pico works fine for this type of application; I know of a few people who pair K701s up with pico and DAPs. You won't get 100% out of the K701s but that is the tradeoff for portability.

Having both the K701 and SE530s, if you HAVE to use a portable, I would highly recommend the RSA Hornet. There is ZERO floor when listening to IEMs on the Low Gain setting and on High Gain it's actually pretty good at driving my K701s.

With portable amps and K701, it's going to be more of a matter of synergy, because none of them are going to be giving you enough power for them to drive the K701 to high potential anyway. So anything that has particularly warm sound sig should do you alright. The two portables that I've had in the past, Headroom Total Bithead and iBasso T4, both actually had good synergy and sounded fine with it due to their relative warmness. With that said, unless you really NEED portability for these I strongly suggest that you look to home amps that would be in that price range still, such as Head Direct EF1/2, Millet Starving Student Hybrid, or even an old receiver of some sort. Increase the budget just a bit (and really, if you can afford the Pico, these should be around same price) and you may even be able to get a used Shanling PH100, an amazing combination with K701 and the best bang/buck for K701 that I've heard.

Yes but...

I agree that the Total Bithead and K701s have pretty good synergy, but I find it non-ideal for IEMs and the noise floor is a little too high with my SE530s (on Low Gain setting).

But with my RSA Hornet, both work really well.

Yeah, Bithead isn't really ideal with sensitive IEM's. Didn't see that part with the IEM in the OP.

I've heard good things about Hornet/K701 synergy as well. I believe Gatto used it too in the past and liked the combo a lot (of course, I believe she's moved on to the Canamp since and hasn't looked back, but hey, if the OP REALLY need a portable then at least it has proven synergy).

thanks for the input guys. i guess it's going to be either pico or hornet, leaning towards pico because i've enjoyed it in the past and justin is a good guy to deal with.
i've owned gilmore lite and littledot mk4se for the big cans in the past, so i know the good desktop amps are much better. its just that i dont want a desktop amp at this moment.

If you are in NYC during the week and want to stop by my office in mid-town, you can listen to my K701 on my Pico, Mustang and Predator. Just PM me.
