DIYmod LOD caps

Thread Starter
I need to make a DIYmod LOD but don't understand how to pick caps.
I will use a Little Dot MK VII, but the sites are down so I can't get any specs ATM.
I don't know if I need film or electrolytic, or the ranges of specs I should be looking in, I only know that I was recommended Blackgate NX Hi-Q 6.3v 47uF, which I can't find stocked anywhere.
Size isn't really an issue as long as they aren't as big as AA batteries each.

Can anyone suggest specific caps to use, and to avoid, or specs to look for?

Also, are these suitable, if not, why not:

Sanyo Oscon Capacitors
47uF 50V Elna Silmic II Electrolytic Capacitor on eBay (end time 17-Dec-09 14:14:43 GMT)

I hope someone can help...because that DIYmod thread is too large to search effectively.

Black Gate Audio Capacitors

The Silmics would be fine also. Oscons aren't supposed to be too good as coupling caps, but I've never tried them for that application.

Thanks.
I'll get the Silmics, as it seems soniccraft.com are closed till Jan 1st and I cba waiting weeks to save a few millimeters.

Film caps will sound better and they can be small too since depending on the value of the pot in your amp you'll probably only need about 1uF. Wimas are common good-sounding film caps and are readily available.

The ipod sound is more or less flat and blent. You probably want to spice it up a little to get more "fun" out of it. Auri caps are good, Vit-Q's are ok, blackgate BGNX will be ok too if you by-pass it with a good film cap (0.022uf teflon will do just fine).

However, if you want to use 2uf and up and still fullfill the "AA size" requirement, the BGNX // teflon is probably the only way to go.

if you want to put the caps inside the LOD dock, then get smallish electrolytics - BG NX HiQ, Elna Cerafine or Silmic - with about 22-47uF value.

however if you want to put them outside the LOD, a la V-Cap dock, then you can get film or PIO caps instead. you might want to try the K75-10 Russian PIO caps, you can find them at eBay.

Would anyone be able to link me to a tutorial or diagram for bypassing caps?

I get the impression that putting in these caps involves the following:
(A diagram in Maya I just threw together, I don't know why the cap meshes won't go away)

I don't know which way round the caps go (+ soldered to LOD pins or -).
If I "bypass" a capacitor, do I just solder the legs of the other cap to the cap being bypassed, but just match the polarity (+ to +, - to -)?

the + goes towards the LOD pins.

Cool thanks.
This is a diagram of what I atm think is bypassing caps. Is this correct?

It's not to scale, unless there's miniature caps worth bypassing the caps with which I doubt.
You can use this pic elsewhere if you wan't (that's assuming it's right :P).

For the film caps, what brand should I go with, some of them are like $75, but my limit is more like $35 a pair for bypass caps.
Is there a certain voltage I need with either the .022uf or 2uf film bypass cap?
After that, are there any specific features I should look for in the cap, or are teflon film caps generally the same?

P4Z, that diagram is correct.

although I personally think that it might be very difficult, if not impossible to put 4 caps inside a dock

why not make one a la V-Cap Dock? put the PIO/film/teflon on a seperate box, along with the bypass caps.

have you tried the Russian K75-10 PIO caps? they're like $10-13 on ebay, and many sell them in lots of 4, 10, etc ($10 for every lot, not for each cap)...

I want to jam the caps inside the iPod 5.5 gen along with the 240 GB HDD. Is this possible?

If you are willing to make something more akin to a v-cap dock then some not too expensive film cap options are Obbligato Gold, Mundorf MKP, and for smaller values possibly the Mundorf MCAP Supreme.
But there are a plethora of even cheaper options then those (those are ones above are ones I have personally bought).
There is an orgy of caps thread around here that you should check out

If you desperately were trying to cram it into a LOD connector you might, by the miracle that is the dremel, be able to fit two V-R MKP1837 as bypass.
I'd love to see it if you do =P

I have decided to make a CMOY for portable use.
For my DIYmod LOD, I will do an external cap dock (which I think you mean is v-cap style).

I will make the CMOY use RCA for input
The v-cap dock will have RCA out to plug straight into the CMOY for portable use, or via cables to my Little Dot MK VII

Would Elna Silmic II 47uf 50v bypassed by these Vitamin Qs or is there a better combo for the price?:

47uF 50V Elna Silmic II Electrolytic Capacitor on eBay (end time 17-Dec-09 14:14:43 GMT)
Allparts Vitamin Q Oil Paper Capacitor 0.047 uF (cap) on eBay (end time 30-Dec-09 00:55:07 GMT)

Also, are these teflons good?:
Russian Teflon Capacitors FT-1 0.022uF 200V 4pcs orMore on eBay (end time 28-Dec-09 03:15:53 GMT)

since you are making the CMOY, why not just install input caps in the amp and forget about the dock??
