I have been out of the portable gear game for awhile. I read when the Classic iPod 1st came out there was audio "issues". Are those issues still existant with the most current 160gb Classic? Would it sound as good as my 5.5g if iModded and if said issues with the Classic have been corrected?

I don't know anything about "issues" with the SQ on the 6G. I have an 80GB 6G classic which was one of the first batches and it sounds great. You'll see in my Sig that I also own a 5G (un-modded). I like both for different reasons:
The 6G is very analytical -- accurate sound with the EQ turned off. It pairs nicely with an Amp, fed via LOD. I prefer my HD600s or my formerly owned AKG K 240's because they both have a great sound stage and worked well in this configuration.
The 5G is a bit warmer and full sounding. I don't like it amped but it pairs nicely with more efficient (lower impedance) headphones like IEMS and on ear headphones. My formerly owned HD 25-SPs worked great in this configuration. I'm waiting on a pair of AKG K 450's to arrive which will likely be my primary headphones for this DAP.
If I had to choose one it would be my 5G because of the RockBox capability and the overall sound. I sometimes grab my 6G when I'm listening to classical or I want to analyze my music, but overall I like the sound of my 5G better.

What 'issues' are we talking about here ? If its Apple's poor quality control and the 'bad batch' rumour, I havent seen anything to indicate that you cant still get a dud.
If you dont get the iMod, you will spend a long time wondering if it would have been better. Send Vinnie your iPod and some money - it will make him very happy - and you can come back and tell us how it went.
