1. your probably dont need to capitalize HEADPHONE - we are reasonably familiar with the term here at HEAD-FI ...

2. yes, I've heard the HD485, briefly, and I believe you will enjoy it if you can find it under your budgetary limit.

Depends on whether you want a blatant copy of someone else's headphone design or not, I guess. Some would argue that Senn are copying Skullcandy with the 485, but they dont look that bad in the store.

Sony XB700s are sweet... there is almost nothing they cannot handle and they can do it un-amped in most cases, so straight out of my Sansa, or, if you have a Zune or iPod.

I would say the V700dj phones also from Sony, because, quite honestly, their freq. response is just MADE for dance music. So are the XB700s, as they share the same drivers, but the response curve on the XBs is flat down to well below bass and into low sub-bass. The v700djs aren't like this, they roll off the lowest freq, though it isn't as if they do it at a stupid mark, it's just they are made for dance and DJ music.

On that note, hit a pro music shop and check out some of the less expensive versions of the Sony v6. (not v600). There are a couple Sony monitors that are still over the ear phones that are less expensive than the v6 and sound amazing. Senn HD555s are really good with electronic music, specifically IDM, but a lot of people dislike how they would handle a classical music piece. Your music source, is basically what will drive this. If it is mp3, a good little headamp system, a reciever/integrated with phono plug, whatever, there are headphones that satisft all these technical situations, but may not be for the music you enjoy.

Never heard the SuperLux but I owned the HD485 for about a year and would highly recommend them.

Yes, I was quite happy at how they sound with so little amplification. This means they blow you away with a moderate headphone pre. I use them with an E-MU 0202 USB, and they just seem made for this setup. They remind me of the tubes vs. Transistor debate, because their sound is colored, but musical. I can enjoy most any music from them, but it isn't always accurate in the mids and HF, which is a good thing, because I would rather rolled off HF than ear shredding HF. The bass is not flabby, it goes low, for sure, but it IS controlled. They aren't fart cannons. Skullcandy and Dr. Dre should take a look at the XB700 and take some notes. THIS is how you do a great basshead electronic music headphone! So for budget minded bassheads that wish for something that can articulate more than just the low end, they are a great pair of cans. Comfy too. Cymbol crashes are so clear and smooth, it is a fun headphone that has a place on my desk with more "serious" models.

Back to the debate, I stand by what I feel about music. There are good all-rounders, but sometimes there are phones that excel in a primary area or taste. I recently stopped lurking here because lately I have noticed the market for good headphones for 150$ or less has exploded. There are now some really quality pieces out there at the lower price points. There were before, but people seem more interested now, so manufacturers are producing new, or updated models.
