what about sansa clip+ and cowon d2?

If screen size isn't important, a new Sansa Clip Plus is a great little player. The sound quality is great, it has a microSD expansion slot, MSC or MTP user selectable and it's small enough to take around all the time. You didn't mention the capacity, but you can get a 2, 4 or 8gb and add cards ftw.

sounds great, but is the SQ as good as D2?
is the sansa clip plus' SQ better than the regular sansa clip?

With no EQ the Clip is better, but if you like EQ then the D2 with it's jeteffects (BBE) sound enhancements is better.

good news, too much options confuse me and distract me from the music.
but is there a difference in SQ between the regular sansa clip to the plus?

Not really noticeable, but on the downside it doesn't have an expansion slot and on the up side if you can get a v1, you can rockbox it ftw

On the origional Clip there were two series releases, I can't recall if it's only firmware and/or hardware, but you can identify the v1 or v2 by the firmware starting with 02, while a v1 Clip has a firmware revision starting with 01. After they released the v2 all the subsequent releases have been v2, including the new Clip Plus. If you are new to all this, just go with the Clip Plus and by the time your ready, there could be a release for it too, but AFAIK no one is working on that fw currently but doesn't differ much from the origional v2 Clip.

The differences are all internal. If you only use the factory-installed firmware, they work exactly the same way and have the same features. The main reason people are usually concerned about v1 or v2 for Sansas is Rockbox compatibility, and microSDHC compatibility. Rockbox only works on the v1 versions of older players.

The v2 Fuze has the processor on the opposite side of the circuit board. It also sports an integrated SDRAM system, without the separate chip of the v1. Functionally, the devices operate the same, with identical capabilities. Either device sounds great.

you mean when i turn it on i'll see something like "sandisk sansa clip 01XXXX"? i see.
and what does rockbox do? it improves SQ?
rockbox allows gapless playback, real EQ's, better format support, and suprise, surprise, even a lessening of hiss with certain players.

I would take the clip over the d2 if you are using dynamic driver earphones, but the d2 if you are using full size headphones or larger phones. the truth is that the d2 simply cannot drive earphones. the clip suffers none of the d2 problems with iems: no bass roll off, better channel separation, and better noise floor. but, it isn't that great with headphones.

if you need something for dynamic driver based earphones: get the clip

if you intend to use any sort of headphone, the d2 is better.

No, when you look under settings/System info you can see fw version, memmory and free space. Rather than explain rockbox, you can read Why Rockbox, which can explain it better. But like I said above, no need for you to go there yet, but a little reading might be tempting or at the least informative
