This is DIY after all, do you have an idea of how it works ?

I should open up the usb power converter I have. its so lightweight that I doubt there is much inside and it does not even feel like there's any trafo at all. it must be switching the ac down to lower voltage all with digital switching chips. at least that's my guess, until I open my own one up. (found one that plugs in and simply gives usb power out, so its likely they use the same circuit inside.)

Yeah I would like to know what they are using now. Like the ones that come with the new iphones/ipods. Those things are tiny and light and produce next to no heat. Heck after you account for the jacks and plugs there is not much room for electronics in them.

All of those "weightless" power adapter have switchmode power electronics inside including a high-frequency transformer. The power level is so phenomenally low that even if the adapter were horribly inefficient they'd still only dissipate a few (1-2) watts.

For that class of power adapter, I'm pretty sure it's mandated by the US national electric code that the low-voltage outputs must be galvanically isolated from the ac-line inputs.
