Trouble during K701 recable: Help!!!

post #1 of 12

So I am going balanced and in the process of recabling my K701's. But I lost the piece of paper where I wrote down the polarity of the drivers. Can someone do me a big favor and open their 701's and check for me?

A sketch of K701 with cap removed. The two positions of the two posts are indicated by green and red stars:

Which post (red or green) is hot (aka '+') and which is cold (aka '-', aka ground).

RESOLVED: Red star is hot. Green star is cold.

Check the continuity with the old SE cable, this with tell you exactly what was what.

Perhaps I was unclear, my apologies. I already disconnected the old cable and attached the new one. I was about to put on the XLR connectors when I realized I'd lost my sheet.

I also went for duel entry - I am not going through the headband, so both sides should be the same, no?

@momomo6789: I don't have my headphones here right now, but I didn't notice any markings (and I definitely looked).

-------------

So is it always the same, or was that a false assumption?

This page says the following.

Right Channel: Orange -> Red
Right Ground: Black -> White
Left Channel: Yellow
Left Ground: White

So this image:

Seems to suggest that the red star is hot and the green is cold.

Where as this image:

Seems to suggest the opposite (though it looks like it might be upside down?)

The schematic seems to agree with the first image that red star is hot and the green is cold.

Any thoughts?

The link to the service manual has all you need.

It points to the Red/Yellow cables being the inphase signals for the right and left channels respectively.
They would be the lower pins when picking the headphones by the headband (red star in your diagram).

The white cables would carry the inverted signal, but since you're not using a balanced configuration, they connect to ground.

EDIT: there is a detail of the driver showing which one is the inphase pin even if you don't have any cables attached.

Wonderful! That's what I wanted to hear. Thank you all very much.
